Acts 27 is not merely a travel log. It is a theology of history in storm form.

Paul is going to Rome because Jesus Christ means for Paul to stand before Caesar. The voyage is not an accident. The chains are not an accident. The storm is not an accident. The shipwreck is not an accident.

Paul has appealed to Caesar, but beneath that legal machinery stands the word of Jesus Christ: Paul must bear witness in Rome. The world sees a prisoner transfer. Heaven sees the Gospel marching into the mouth of the beast.

The resurrection of the dead.

Paul is not in chains because he committed a civil crime. He is bound because he insists that Jesus Christ is risen, that the King has already passed through death, that judgment has been transformed by mercy, and that the world’s highest courts are not high enough to overturn an empty tomb.

Rome is the destination.

Italy, the old “land of the bull,” is the center of imperial weight. Grain moves there. Soldiers move there. Prisoners move there. Money moves there. Power moves there.

The empire feeds itself through the sea, and the sea is not tame. The Alexandrian grain ships are the arteries of the imperial body, carrying Egypt’s wheat toward Rome’s belly.

Paul enters that system in chains. But the prisoner is the free man. The apostle is the true authority. Julius the centurion has the military commission. The shipmaster has the technical knowledge. The owner has the financial stake. The sailors have the seamanship. But when the storm removes sun, stars, confidence, cargo, and control, Paul is the one left standing with the word that cannot drown.

The first lesson:

You can be bound by the world and still be sheltered by God. Julius belongs to the Augustan cohort, the revered regiment, the imperial machinery of Caesar. His name carries Roman weight. Julius. Clan Julia. Aeneas. Troy. Empire. Myth. Prestige. Power with a pedigree. He is not a random guard with a spear and a dull afternoon. He is an agent of Rome’s ordered world.

And yet, he is assigned to guard Paul.

There is irony here sharp enough to cut rope. Rome thinks it is transporting a prisoner. God is escorting an ambassador. The empire thinks it has custody of the apostle. The apostle is carrying the word that will outlive the empire.

At Sidon, Julius allows Paul to visit friends and receive care. That detail matters. Even inside the machinery of imperial custody, shelter appears. Not escape. Shelter. Not comfort. Care. Not deliverance from the mission. Provision for the mission.

This is how God works. Not by removing the chains, but by placing mercy inside them.

Then the winds turn contrary.

We imagine that if Jesus Christ commands the destination, the wind should cooperate. If Paul must stand before Caesar, why should the sea resist him? If the calling is real, why does everything become harder? If God is guiding the ship, why does the ship feel weaker every hour?

Paul is in the will of God, yet the weather is against him. Paul is obeying the call, but the ship is delayed. Paul carries the resurrection, and the sea looks like death.

This is not contradiction. This is the shape of the Christian life under the cross.

The believer lives the simul. Saint and sinner. Free and bound. Dying and alive. Judged in Adam and justified in Jesus Christ. Paul is both prisoner and ambassador.

The voyage is both disaster and divine appointment. The storm is both threat and tool. The sea is both chaos and classroom.

There is more comfort in knowing the Father rules the storm than in imagining the storm belongs to a rival power outside His hand. The devil may rage, but he does not reign. Job was truly attacked. Job was truly afflicted. Job truly suffered. But Job was never outside the hand of God.

The Father disciplines sons.

Modern Christianity has trained itself to confuse tenderness with indulgence. But the Father’s love is not softness without purpose. The Gospel is not proof that God avoids crushing. The cross reveals that God brings resurrection through crushing.

The Son was not preserved from death. He was brought through death, and death was forced to become the doorway of life.

So when the wind is against you, do not rush to conclude that you are off course. Sometimes the contrary route is the right way.

That is the Church in history.

To sail under shelter is to use the landmass as cover from the wind. The progress is slower. The route is not heroic. Nobody writes songs about a ship crawling along the lee side of an island while the open water sneers at it. But the shelter holds.

The Church does not move through the world by raw power. She does not own the weather. She does not command the sea. She sails under shelter. She receives providential cover. She advances by hidden mercy. She moves slowly when the open sea would kill her.

This is not failure. This is faith.

We want open water and clean wind. God gives us islands, delays, awkward harbors, winter warnings, partial cover, and enough grace for the next stretch. We want a straight line to Rome. God gives us Sidon, Cyprus, Myra, Cnidus, Crete, Fair Havens, Clauda, darkness, anchors, bread, wreckage, and shore.

The way is not efficient. It is true.

At Myra, Julius finds an Alexandrian ship sailing to Italy. The vessel is not a dinghy. It is part of the imperial grain trade, a massive merchant ship carrying wheat from Egypt toward Rome. It represents the economic lifeblood of the empire.

This is Mammon with planks.

The ship is useful. It is impressive. It is technical. It is necessary to Rome’s order. But it is not immortal. That distinction will become everything. At Fair Havens, the decision point comes. The Fast has already passed. The season has turned. Sailing is now dangerous.

The prisoner sees what the professionals refuse to see. Paul warns them plainly: this voyage will bring disaster and much loss, not only of cargo and ship, but also of life. The centurion listens instead to the pilot and the owner of the ship. Of course he does. That is what sensible men do. Listen to the experts. Listen to the money. Listen to the men with the equipment. Listen to the people whose names are on the paperwork.

But expertise becomes stupidity when Mammon has its hand on the tiller. The owner does not want to winter in an inconvenient harbor. The sailors think they can make Phoenix. The majority agrees. A soft south wind begins to blow, and that little whisper of favorable circumstance seals the delusion.

But that soft south wind was not blessing.

It is bait.

Men often mistake temporary ease for divine approval. The door opens, the numbers work, the majority agrees, the professionals nod, the schedule can still be saved, the money might still be preserved, and everyone tells himself the warning was too severe.

Then the Northeaster comes.

Euraquilo. Euroclydon. The violent wind. The storm that does not negotiate. The ship is caught. The crew cannot face the wind. They give way and are driven. They secure the skiff. They undergird the ship with cables, frapping the hull to keep the boards from coming apart. They fear the Syrtis sands, those deadly shoals off North Africa. They lower the gear. They throw cargo overboard. Then the tackle. Eventually even the wheat.

Everything they sailed to save must be surrendered.

First goes confidence. Then cargo. Then equipment. Then hope. Last of all, the very grain they risked the voyage to preserve is poured into the sea.

The ship was an instrument. They treated it as salvation. The cargo was provision. They treated it as god. The storm exposes the difference.

Hope Abandoned, Gospel Restored

For many days, neither sun nor stars appear. That is not decorative detail. Ancient navigation depends on the heavens. No sun. No stars. No bearings. No external measure. The crew is not merely uncomfortable. They are blind inside a moving tomb.

Then Paul stands.

He begins with the sentence nobody wants to hear and everybody needs to hear: “You should have listened to me.”

This is not petty. It is surgery. Grace does not begin by pretending foolishness was wisdom. Mercy does not allow denial. Paul names the failure because reality must be re-established before courage can be rebuilt. They are in this storm because they ignored the word. They trusted profit, majority, expertise, and favorable wind over warning.

But Paul does not stop with rebuke. He says an angel of the God to whom he belongs and whom he serves stood by him. Paul must stand before Caesar. And God has granted him all those sailing with him.

That is staggering.

God has granted him their lives? This means Paul has not spent the fourteen days merely enduring. He has been interceding. While sailors panicked, while soldiers calculated, while prisoners trembled, while the hull groaned, Paul prayed. He stood before God for the ship that ignored him.

This is apostolic leadership.

Not control. Intercession.

Not image management. Prayer.

Not saving the institution. Pleading for lives.

The promise is clear: every person will survive.

But the ship will be lost.

We want God to save the ship. Save the structure. Save the system. Save the reputation. Save the platform. Save the visible machinery that carried us this far. But there is a violent distinction between the vessel and the souls.

The ship is not the promise.

The people are.

This does not mean structures do not matter. Ships matter. Grain matters. Seamanship matters. Anchors matter. Food matters. Soundings matter. The sailors still have to know what they are doing. Faith does not despise means.

But means are mortal.

The visible vessel can break. The institution can splinter. The respected hull can run aground and be torn apart by surf. The thing that looked indispensable can become debris beneath the feet of those swimming to shore.

But not one hair need perish.

That is not optimism.

That is resurrection.

The sailors attempt their own salvation. Under pretense of putting out anchors from the bow, they lower the skiff. The experts decide to abandon the rest. Their plan is simple: let the ship die, let the passengers die, let the prisoners die, let the soldiers face the consequences, but save ourselves in the small boat.

Paul sees it. “Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.”

The word sounds almost contradictory. Has not God promised survival? Yes. But the promise includes means. The sailors must stay. The ship must be managed. The crash must be faced together. No private escape boat. No elite exit. No secret skiff for those who think their expertise entitles them to survive separately.

The soldiers cut the ropes.

Faith with a knife in its hand.

They do not debate the skiff. They do not hold it in reserve. They do not keep an emergency option just in case Paul’s word proves too severe. They cut the ropes and let the boat fall into the sea.

There are moments when obedience means removing the escape you most want to keep.

No more skiff. No more fantasy exit. No more hidden plan to save yourself apart from the people God has bound you to. No more speedboat ecclesiology. No more fleeing the ship while pretending to serve it.

Stay in the ship.

Not because the ship will survive.

Because God has spoken.

Then Paul tells them to eat. Fourteen days of fear-driven abstinence. Fourteen days of darkness. Fourteen days of nausea, panic, labor, cold, wet wood, groaning beams, shouted orders, and unanswered horizons.

Paul takes bread, gives thanks to God in the presence of them all, breaks it, and begins to eat.

Not more boats.

Bread in the storm.

This is not the Lord’s Supper in the strict sacramental sense, but the pattern is impossible to miss. Took it. Gave thanks. Broke it. Ate.

The apostle performs a resurrection-shaped act in the face of death. He does not deny the crash. He feeds men for it.

Faith does not make the wreck unreal.

Faith gives strength for the swim.

Paul’s meal is not sentimental. He is not offering religious mood music while the ship dissolves. He is commanding terrified men to receive sustenance because their bodies will need strength. The promise does not cancel the swim. Grace does not eliminate exhaustion. The word of God does not make wood float forever.

The final surrender.

They eat. They are encouraged. Then they throw the wheat into the sea.

The cargo that drove the risk becomes the weight that must be lost. What they tried to preserve almost killed them. What they release makes survival possible.

You may be in the will of God and still face contrary winds. You may be under divine assignment and still lose the ship. You may be right and still ignored. You may warn the room and watch the room choose Mammon. You may endure the consequences of other men’s stupidity. You may spend fourteen days without sun or stars. You may have to cut away the escape boat. You may have to eat in the presence of people who still do not understand what God is doing.

But Jesus Christ has spoken. The resurrection matters more than the storm.

You do not need to pretend the ship is fine. You do not need to call rotten planks healthy. You do not need to save every institution that once carried grain. You do not need to mistake undergirding the hull for salvation.

You must not worship the vessel.

Be faithful in it. Pray for those in it. Speak the warning. Cut the skiff. Break the bread. Prepare for the swim.

The most dangerous man in the world met a Stoic, and all the philosopher would say to him was, “Get out of my light.”

To this insult, Alexander smiled and then announced to all around, “If I could not be Alexander, I would be Diogenes.”

Most men bend because they have something to lose. Diogenes removed the category. Alexander recognized it immediately. Not because he wanted to live in a barrel, but because he understood the freedom that comes when a man cannot be coerced.

This is not poverty as deprivation. It is poverty as weapon. A stripping-down so severe that the world loses its grip. And that is why Stoicism still matters. It is not about squalor. It is about sovereignty of spirit.

What the Beggars Tried to Build

The later Stoics—Epictetus, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius—saw the same problem and systematized a response. Their move was not to discard the world, but to classify it.

• Control what is yours; release what is not

• Accept fate; align with reason

• Train the mind to remain undisturbed

The Stoic man is internally fortified. He does not need the barrel. He can stand in a palace and still be free.

This is why Stoicism has returned. It translates well into modern pressure: uncertainty, volatility, loss of control. It offers a clean proposition—stability without dependence.

Online, it has become a stripped-down doctrine: endure; detach; discipline; do not react.

It promises a man who cannot be shaken.

Where Stoicism Stops

Stoicism achieves something real. It breaks the tyranny of circumstance. It produces men who can endure war, loss, exile, betrayal, and still stand. But it does so by narrowing the field.

The Stoic solution depends on reducing the weight of the external world. If nothing outside you ultimately matters, then nothing outside you can destroy you. The Stoic becomes immovable by redefining the stakes.

That may be a fair trade, but it is a trade nonetheless. It is a philosophy of interior control, not ultimate truth. It does not solve the question of judgment. It sidesteps it.

The Christian Face

Christianity does not permit such crass reductionism.

It agrees on one point: fear of man is bondage. Wealth cannot save. Status is vapor. The one who stands before kings without trembling has already stepped outside the system of control.

But Christianity stands directly on the question that Stoicism leaves unresolved. There is judgment. Not abstract. Not metaphorical. Not dissolvable through mental discipline.

God’s wrath is coming.

Christianity does not say, “Reduce the importance of externals.” It says: the externals will be judged, and so will you. That changes everything. Because now the goal is not detachment from consequence. It is alignment with truth before a living Judge.

The Limit of Fearlessness

Diogenes stands before Alexander without fear. That is real. That is rare. But his fearlessness is grounded in dismissal. He is, in the end, a scoffer.

If death comes, it comes. If power crushes him, so be it. He has already decided it does not matter. But that is not peace. That is abandonment.

Christianity does not allow this conclusion. Death matters. Justice matters. What is done in the body matters. What is loved, chosen, rejected—all of it stands.

The difference is not subtle. It is absolute. Stoicism removes fear by lowering the value of what can be taken. Christianity removes fear by anchoring the man beyond what can be taken, and then raising the stakes of what cannot be escaped.

Alexander’s Insight

Alexander saw in Diogenes what he himself pursued through conquest: a state where nothing external dictates the man. He sought it through expansion. Diogenes through subtraction. Both aimed at the same target: invulnerability. But neither system answers the final court.

Alexander dies. Diogenes dies. Their immunity to one another does not grant immunity to what stands above both.

Modern Stoicism functions as a survival tool. It trains composure. It cuts emotional excess. It stabilizes men in chaos. In a culture of volatility, it feels like bedrock. But it often arrives amputated:

• Discipline without truth

• Detachment without love

• Endurance without judgment

It becomes a way to feel unshakable without asking whether one stands rightly. It offers strength without submission. It spreads like gangrene rather than like wildflowers.

Christ: a New Center

The Christian man is not called to be unfeeling, nor merely unshaken. He is called to stand. Not because nothing matters, but because everything does. He does not fear Alexander. He does not worship comfort. He does not cling to life as ultimate.

But he does not dismiss judgment. He lives before it. And that produces a different kind of immovability. Not the stillness of reduction, but the stillness of alignment.

To be Diogenes is to become ungovernable by the world. To be Stoic is to become untroubled by the world. To be Christian is to stand rightly before the One who governs it.

The first two can make a man formidable. Only the third answers the final question.

Because the sunlight is real. The empire is real. Alexander’s sword is real.

And none of them get the last word.

It is a delivery system.

What appears in Acts 26 as a stalled legal proceeding would be seen by any normal person as the judgment of God, a burden and a plague, Jesus Himself turning His back on you. But it is, to St. Paul, a precision movement of the Gospel through the arteries of empire.

A man in chains stands before governors and kings, not because the system has trapped him, but because God has positioned him. The machinery of Rome, skeptical, bureaucratic, self-protective, becomes an unwitting servant. The lynch mob in Jerusalem cannot reach him. The appeal to Caesar cannot be undone. The path to Rome is sealed.

And Agrippa has to listen.

This is the reversal of the Gospel. The cross of prison is not a problem to Paul. It is protection. It is a platform. It is certainty.

Paul understands. That is why he does not begin with defense. He begins with a confession that sounds bizarre.

“I think myself happy.”

He is in chains.

But he is not a man deluding himself, nor a man numbing his pain. He is one who has been placed, precisely and immovably, under the hand of God.

He is not talking about emotional elation. Paul is not happy because the circumstances are pleasant. He is happy because the coordinates are correct. This is Makarios. Blessedness. The state of standing where you are supposed to stand.

The court is filled with power.’

Festus, the Roman governor, carries the cold logic of empire. He needs charges, not theology. Stability, not truth. His world is iron, roads, taxes, order. Resurrection does not compute. It threatens the system’s assumptions.

Agrippa, by contrast, knows the language. He is fluent in the Law, the Prophets, the hope of Israel. He is a king in name, a scholar in practice, and a captive of his own political reality. He understands what Paul is saying. That is why Paul addresses him directly. Not to win a case, but to press a conscience.

Paul exposes the fault line.

One man rejects the possibility of resurrection outright. The other recognizes its plausibility but cannot yield to it. Between them stands a prisoner who claims to be free in chains.

To understand that freedom, Paul takes us backward. Before he was a witness, he was a weapon. He names it plainly. He was not merely mistaken. He was enraged. He hunted Christians, imprisoned them, forced them to blaspheme, cast votes for their execution. This was not passive error. It was active violence, fueled by a zeal that believed itself righteous.

He was, in his own terms, a Pharisee of Pharisees. A constitutionalist of the Law. Not just obedient, but aggressive in enforcement. Identity defined by boundary. Purity defended by force.

Then came the break.

On the road to Damascus, the world did not gently shift. It collapsed. Light brighter than the sun. Body to the ground. Voice in his own tongue.

“Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”

Not “them”.

Me.

In that moment, categories shattered. The Church is not merely a group. It is a body. To strike the believer is to strike Christ Himself. The persecution was not horizontal. It was vertical.

The line that explains everything follows:

“It is hard for you to kick against the goads.”

The image is agricultural. An ox, resisting the plow, kicking back against the spike that is meant to guide it. The more it resists, the more it wounds itself. Strength turned backward. Effort producing pain.

Paul’s entire former life is named in that sentence. He was not advancing righteousness. He was fighting the direction of God. Every act of violence was a deeper wound. The Law was not failing. It was driving. And when it finally broke him, the Gospel did not negotiate.

It commissioned.

“Rise. Stand on your feet.”

Not crawl away. Not hide. Not “pay me what you owe.”

Stand.

Then two more words: minister and witness.

A minister is not a strategist. He is an under-rower. A man beneath the deck, pulling the oar assigned to him. Direction comes from above. His strength is not autonomous.

A witness is not an innovator. He does not craft the message. He repeats what he has seen and heard. Accuracy, not creativity, is the task.

Paul loses control of his life in that moment.

He loses it, and he gains it.

From that point forward, everything is reinterpreted through a single axis: he belongs to another Master. That is why chains do not define him. The modern instinct is to locate freedom in the removal of constraints. Remove the chain, then you are free. Solve the problem, then you can be at peace.

Paul’s life is Christ Jesus, the Lord, rejecting that entire framework.

So Paul does not call the chains good. He does not romanticize suffering. He names them plainly. “Except for these chains.” But they are not decisive. They are not his identification. Because the decisive question is not, “What is binding you?” but “Who is governing you?” If the answer is Christ, then the location, even a courtroom, even a prison, becomes secondary.

This is where his happiness comes from.

Not from denial, but from alignment.

This is where Christ said he would be. This is doing what Christ told him to do. This is speaking to the kinds of men Christ said he would face.

The prophecy is unfolding in real time. That produces a form of contentment that does not fluctuate with conditions, as gratitude becomes muscle memory.

This is not sentimental. It is discipline. What you rehearse, you inhabit. If you rehearse grievance, you deepen grievance. If you rehearse fear, you multiply fear. Paul rehearses placement.

“I am here because I was sent.”

That is enough to anchor him. From that anchor, he speaks the core of his message: the hope of the promise. He insists that he is not introducing something new. He is standing in continuity with Israel. The twelve tribes, the sacrifices, the prayers night and day, all of it has been oriented toward one outcome.

Resurrection.

Life overcoming death.

He presses the simplest question in the room. Why should it be thought incredible that God raises the dead? If God exists, resurrection is not the strange claim. It is the expected one.

This is where Festus breaks. “Paul, you are out of your mind.”

To a world built on material continuity, death is the final boundary. To speak of resurrection is to violate the rules. It sounds like madness. Paul does not escalate. He does not defend himself emotionally.

“I am not mad… but speak the words of truth and reason.”

He remains calm because his identity is not under threat. The verdict of the court cannot overturn the verdict of heaven. Then he turns again to Agrippa.

“Do you believe the prophets?”

He does not ask for a philosophical concession. He asks for consistency. If you believe the texts, then you must face their conclusion.

Agrippa answers with a most revealing line. “Almost you persuade me.”

Almost.

He is caught. Intellectually aware. Existentially unwilling. The cost of belief is too high. The system he inhabits cannot absorb the confession. So he remains in the threshold.

And Paul, still in chains, declares his desire: “I would to God [that you did!]”

“I would to God that not only you, but also all who hear me today, might become both almost and altogether such as I am—except for these chains.”

It is the paradox. The man bound in iron invites the free men to become like him. Because he knows something they do not. Freedom is not the absence of chains. It is the presence of the right Master.

The trial ends with a legal conclusion. No crime. Nothing deserving death or imprisonment. The system itself declares him innocent. And yet the chains remain. Not because justice failed, but because the mission continues. Rome is still ahead.

The lesson is not subtle.

You will not always be released from the conditions you would choose to escape. The chain may stay. The pressure may remain. The setting may not change. But the axis has already shifted. You are already moved from darkness to light. From one power to another. From self-governance to Christ’s lordship. That transfer does not wait for ideal circumstances. It is declared.

It is already a given.

Stay in the fire. That is where the holiness forms.

Clarity without ease. Peace without resolution. Happiness without escape.

Not because the world has improved, but because you are in the right place. Exactly where God put you.

It feels like collapse.

Not because the bond was good, but because the soul learned to live inside distortion.

Rhythm formed around unpredictability. Speech formed around defense. Thought formed around anticipation.

Crookedness does not ask you to relate to another person. It demands that you calibrate yourself to survive their shifting ground.

Remove that ground and the structure built on it falls with it.

That experience is not peace. It is disorientation.

Silence feels unnatural.

The absence of accusation can feel like suspense. The mind replays conversations, not because truth is unclear, but because it was trained to search for hidden turns, double meanings, traps inside ordinary words. Do you explain yourself to empty rooms? Do you brace for criticism that does not come? Do you feel the echo of judgment where no voice is speaking?

This is what it means to stand upright in a crooked field. It is not just about accepting what has happened. It is about regrowing what was malformed.

Crookedness does more than injure. It trains you to doubt your own perception. It trains you to prioritize others’ reaction over what is actually true. It trains you to carry both sides of the conversation, to supply justification in advance, to absorb blame in order to keep the semblance intact.

Over time, this becomes second nature. Not a chosen strategy, but an inhabited posture.

This makes separation from the pressure feel like withdrawal. Not because what was there before was life-giving, but because the pattern was life-consuming. Unpredictability became familiarity. Lack of approval became reinforcement. The cycle of tension and release became the rhythm of expectation.

When that disappears, the body does not immediately rejoice. It searches, and that search produces confusion. The heart knows, at the level of fact, that something was wrong. There are words, actions, patterns that do not align with truth. But another voice runs alongside that knowledge: maybe it wasn’t that bad; maybe you misread it; maybe you should have adjusted; maybe you were the problem.

That is not new insight.

That is residue.

Shame leaves an afterimage. It continues speaking after the accuser is gone. So the work for the justified is not to discover new information. It is to separate what is true from the lies that were installed.

Here, the moral frame of Christianity becomes all the more necessary. The issue is not about diagnostics. The issue is whether your current reality is straight or bent.

Crookedness operates by inversion. It reframes harm as sensitivity. It reframes boundaries as aggression. It reframes clarity as cruelty. It calls “good” evil.

Crookedness projects its own instability outward and then demands that you answer for it. It shifts standards so that what was praised yesterday is condemned today. Living inside that frame, it is impossible to stabilize. The ground is designed to move beneath your feet.

This is where Christian morality requires naming. It demands categories.

Not dramatizing. Not diagnosing.

Clean lines.

This is straight. That is bent.

This was said. That was done.

These align. Those contradict.

Once you begin using Words that dispel distortion, you might discover something unexpected surfacing: Anger, or maybe its near cousin, disgust.

This isn’t theatre. This isn’t fit-throwing. This is deep and powerful recognition. You can see that what is treated as confusion has structure. That what is dismissed as misunderstanding has pattern. That what is framed as failure is the product of some other refusal to face the truth.

This anger is not the end.

It is a clearing.

It breaks the illusion that if you only adjust more, the structure will stabilize.

Crookedness does not stabilize through accommodation. It feeds on it, and this is why it is imperative that disgust give way to identity.

If you have lived inside a field of distorted words long enough, you do not exit it unchanged. You discover that parts of your life were not freely chosen but shaped. Preferences muted. Convictions softened. Speech edited. Reactions filtered. Not out of deception, but out of survival.

Those adaptations remain even after the pressure that required them is gone. This can leave you with a version of yourself that feels partially foreign. Out of place. Painful.

This is not loss of identity. It is a rediscovery of it. Now you see what is truly yours and what was formed around something else.

This work is slow.

You begin making small decisions without external calibration. You speak plainly where you once hedged. You stop pre-justifying. You allow silence to remain. You let your perception stand long enough to be tested against reality rather than immediately surrendered to explanations.

Trust returns. Not in a moment, but through repetition.

You see something. You name it. It holds.

You feel something. You examine it. It holds.

You set a boundary. The world does not collapse.

Over time, what was crooked is made straight.

This leads to a restoration of your ability to pass judgment. Under crooked structures, judgment is a weapon. It was not a tool for truth but a means of control. Standards move. Accusations shift. Evaluation is not by what is real but by what preserves the field.

Crooked fields teach you to fear judgment. Or to chase it.

Both are forms of captivity.

The correction is not to abandon discernment, but to restore it. Upright judgment is not domination. It is alignment with the Truth. It weighs words and actions without distortion. It does not inflate. It does not excuse. It does not shift to preserve comfort. It simply measures.

When you recover that, something else happens. Your fear begins to shrink.

Not because things have changed. Most of the world may remain exactly the same. But you are no longer viewing it through a distorted lens. What once appeared powerful is revealed as unstable. What once felt authoritative is exposed as reactive. What once controlled the story is seen to depend on constant manipulation to maintain it.

The size of the enemy is partly an effect of our adaptation to his schemes. Remove the adaptation, and the scale changes.

This does not erase the past.

It reframes it.

And redeems the most unexpected freedom of all: solitude.

At first, it feels like absence. But comfort with solitude is level ground. Without constant pressure, without shifting standards, without the need to calibrate yourself to instability, you experience a different kind of space. Not empty, just unforced.

This is stabilization. You no longer react in order to prove. You no longer structure your inner life around the world’s unpredictability. You no longer measure your worth by the game of shifting perceptions.

You stand.

This is where the language of “empath” fails entirely. Not because care, sensitivity, or attunement are false, but because they are insufficient as an identity and have no place for solitude. Empath describes capacity, not posture. An empath can exist inside crookedness as well as inside uprightness.

Uprightness is not defined by how deeply you feel, but by how firmly you stand. It does not abandon compassion, but it refuses to let compassion override reality. It does not reject relationship. It simply will not sustain one that requires distortion to continue.

It does not seek conflict, but neither does it avoid conflict at the cost of what is real.

That is redemption. Not from victim to survivor. From distortion to alignment. From entanglement to uprightness. From living inside a crooked frame to standing under the throne of God that does not move.

There is a particular kind of contempt that cuts deeper than insult. It is not loud. It is settled. It comes from men who are comfortable, socially insulated, politically positioned, professionally rewarded… the type who can afford to look down on conviction as if it were a defect.

That is the air in Acts 24 and 25. Not chaos. Not open persecution. A courtroom. Polished language. Procedure. And underneath it, a system willing to trade truth for stability.

Paul stands inside that system with a clean conscience. That is the whole frame.

The first thing to understand is that lies require architecture.

A lie is never just a statement. It is a structure. It needs reinforcement, repetition, coordination. It needs a narrative that can be retold without collapsing under its own contradictions. When enough people agree to carry it, it begins to feel real—not because it is, but because it is maintained.

That is how mobs form. Not always in the street. Often in rooms. In circles. In professional consensus.

Truth does not work like that.

Truth is not maintained. It persists.

It does not need to be propped up because it is anchored in what actually happened.

That is why, under pressure, the man telling the truth does not have to remember his lines. He remembers reality. His account holds because it is not constructed.

This is where the peace comes from. Not from winning. Not from being believed. From the fact that you are not carrying something artificial.

The lie drifts. The truth has weight.

The second thing is harder. You must stop being surprised.

If you expect a crooked system to produce straight outcomes, you will be thrown every time that it doesn’t.

That shock is not neutral. It destabilizes you. It pulls you into reaction. It hands your composure over to the very people who benefit from your agitation.

Paul sits in prison for two years. Not because the case is unclear. Not because evidence is lacking. Because a governor wants a favor.

That is not an exception.

That is the pattern.

Integrity does not protect you from mistreatment. It prepares you to endure it without losing your footing. When you understand the nature of the field you are in, deception loses its ability to rattle you.

Calm is not passivity. It is positioning.

Look closely at the men across from Paul.

Felix. A former slave who climbed into power and never outgrew the instincts that got him there. He governs for advantage. He listens for bribes. His private life mirrors his public one—acquisition, manipulation, appetite.

Festus follows him. New name, same structure. Maintain order. Keep the peace. Avoid disruption. If that requires bending a case, so be it.

These are not monsters. These are professionals.

Ladder-climbers.

Men who know how the system works and intend to survive inside it.

Now set Paul beside them. They operate from self-interest. He operates from self-control. They calculate outcomes. He testifies to what is. They need the situation to resolve cleanly. He needs to remain faithful.

This contrast is the whole point. Not that Paul escapes the system, but that he stands inside it without being shaped by it.

The irony.

The Roman system—pagan, political, imperfect—retained a basic commitment to procedure. The accused faced his accusers. Claims required substance. A man could say, “Prove it,” and expect that to mean something.

Today, we have drifted far from that solid ground.

Volume has replaced witness. Consensus has replaced evidence. The accusation itself often carries more weight than the requirement to substantiate it.

The older standard—two or three witnesses, face-to-face accountability—was not arbitrary. It was a safeguard against exactly the kind of narrative-driven judgment that now passes for certainty.

When that safeguard erodes, power fills the gap. Not truth.

Paul does not remain passive. When Festus attempts to shift the venue back to Jerusalem—a move dressed in procedure but loaded with political intent—Paul answers with precision: “I appeal to Caesar.”

This is not desperation. It is clarity. He understands the structure he is inside. He understands his rights within it. And he uses them without apology.

The kingdom of Jesus Christ does not erase the existence of earthly systems. It runs through them. A man can belong fully to Christ and still make lawful appeals within the state he inhabits. Paul does not confuse the two realms. He does not collapse them. He leverages one in service of the other.

Not as compromise. As mission.

The pressure building around all of this is not theoretical. The cultural buffer that once allowed for loose thinking and shallow conviction is thinning.

Fast.

Legal language shifts. Speech boundaries tighten. Public and private lines blur. In multiple Western contexts, the cost of holding and articulating certain truths is rising, not falling.

That begets requirement. You cannot outsource discernment. You cannot rely on ambient agreement to carry your convictions. If you do not know what you believe—and why—you will eventually find yourself unable to say it, or unwilling to bear the cost of saying it.

“Wise as serpents, innocent as doves” is not poetic language. It is operational instruction. You ground yourself in Scripture. Not as decoration, but as structure. Gospels for the center. Proverbs for the edge. Psalms for the inner life before God. Without these, you drift into whatever narrative is most efficiently delivered to you.

Not a strategy but a posture.

A clean conscience is not just moral comfort. It is stability under pressure. When you know you stand before Jesus Christ, forgiven, claimed, and bound for resurrection, the leverage of men diminishes. They can delay. They can misrepresent. They can trade your name for their advantage. But they cannot rewrite reality.

They cannot overturn the final court. That is where the appeal ultimately lands. Not in Rome. Not in any system that can be bent by favor. In the authority that does not shift. Before the throne of God.

The question is not whether the pressure will come.

It will.

The question is whether, when it does, you are standing on something that does not move.

“If he does this, he’s a Narcissist.”

“If you feel that way, you’re an Empath.”

It feels like recognition.

What was tangled becomes named. What was disorienting becomes ordered. The story resolves into two roles you can hold without strain.

One wounds. One feels.

One takes. One gives.

The relief is real. It’s an effective hook.

But psychobabble’s recent Narcissist-Empath fad-theory did not arrive as a finished system. It formed in motion. Old psychological terms drifted forward; new therapy language added texture; moral instincts about harm and innocence supplied weight. Then the whole mix passed through platforms built to reward clarity, confidence, and repetition.

What survives in pop pathology is what can be said quickly, remembered easily, and applied everywhere. Older words from moral and religious discourse fused with newer language from therapy culture inside algorithmic media built for speed, emotional recognition, and identity shorthand now popularized as a single framework that is really just a stack of borrowed parts:

• Freud’s Narcissism;

• the modern history of empathy;

• Jung’s symbolic and typological grammar;

• humanistic therapy’s esteem for empathic listening;

• attachment and trauma language about sensitivity and hypervigilance;

• self-help commercialization;

• YouTube sermonizing;

• AI voice cloning;

All of it feeding on the recommendation engine that rewards confidence, clarity, and repeatability.

It is a potent framework that is at once true and false.

It is not false because it has no contact with reality. In fact, it often describes real manipulations, real asymmetries, real distortions of speech, memory, and shared reality. But the frame is unstable because each layer changes the meaning of the layer before it. A concept that began in one discipline is repeated in another, simplified in a third, dramatized in a fourth, and then spoken back in the borrowed face and voice of someone who never said it. The result is not pure nonsense. It is something more slippery: partial truth with broken provenance.

Dig Deep

The first root is not Jung but Freud. Sigmund Freud’s 1914 essay On Narcissism is the classic psychoanalytic source that formalized the concept. In Freud, narcissism was not an internet epithet for a manipulative spouse or ex-partner. It was a theory about libido, the ego, and development. Freud treated “primary narcissism” as a normal early condition and “secondary narcissism” as a withdrawal of libidinal investment back into the self. Even the word itself did not originate with Freud alone; later reference works note that Freud borrowed a term already circulating in psychiatric discussion, including use by Paul Näcke, but Freud is the figure who made Narcissism a major psychoanalytic category.

That matters because the internet use of “Narcissist” is several translations removed from its origin. The route runs like this:

• mythic Narcissus;

• early psychiatric terminology;

• Freud’s psychoanalytic development theory;

• later object-relations and self-psychology expansions;

• modern diagnostic psychiatry;

• and then mass-culture shorthand.

By the time the word appears in online relationship content, it usually no longer means what Freud meant. Often it means some blend of grandiose self-protection, exploitative relating, low accountability, emotional inversion, and strategic use of language. Sometimes that blend points to something real. But it is no longer the original term. It is a folk diagnosis built on layered inheritance.

Jump Forward

Modern psychiatry narrowed the term again. The American Psychiatric Association describes narcissistic personality disorder as a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present across contexts.

That is a clinical threshold, not a synonym for “crooked person” or “person who hurt me.” Many people called Narcissists online would not meet that diagnostic standard, while some who do meet elements of the standard may not resemble the internet caricature. The online world therefore uses the word far more broadly, morally, and narratively than psychiatry does.

The second root is empathy, and here the genealogy is even more easily misunderstood. “Empath” is not a Jungian invention.

The English word “empathy” entered in the early twentieth century as a translation of the German Einfühlung. Edward Titchener is commonly credited with introducing the term into English around 1909.

Early empathy language did not primarily mean what people mean now by “I am an empath.” It first belonged heavily to aesthetics, projection, and the act of “feeling into” an object or form. Only later did the word broaden into interpersonal understanding, emotional attunement, and therapeutic sensitivity.

So the internet phrase “the empath” also sits on a historical distortion. The base word empathy has legitimate intellectual history. But “empath,” as a stable personal type, is much newer and much looser. Even mainstream health and psychology sources now say that “empath” is not a formal diagnosis, though many people identify with the term to describe heightened sensitivity to others’ emotions. That means the word is culturally powerful but clinically soft. It names a felt pattern, not a disciplined category.

Archetypically

Carl Jung enters the story at a different angle. Jung did not coin the Empath-Narcissist polarity. What he provided was something else: a symbolic grammar for interpreting persons and patterns.

Jung developed the concepts of introversion and extraversion, archetypes, and the collective unconscious. He gave later culture a language for recurring figures, shadows, compensations, projections, and one-sided personalities. This made him immensely attractive to later interpreters who wanted to narrate modern relational struggle in mythic terms. Jung supplied the stage, the masks, and the dramatic lighting. He did not supply the specific internet binary.

That distinction is essential. Jung’s scholarship is typological, symbolic, and developmental. Internet “Jung” content is often moralized, therapeuticized, and then flattened into scripts. It moves from “shadow and projection” to “the Narcissist fears the healed Empath.” It moves from analytic psychology to algorithmic mythology.

The scholarship changes genre. Jung was writing theory and interpretation. The content economy produces recognitional drama. One asks the reader to descend into ambiguity. The other promises that ambiguity has already been decoded.

Then What?

A fourth root comes from humanistic psychology, especially Carl Rogers. Rogers made empathy central to the therapeutic relationship.

Britannica’s summaries of Rogers and of psychotherapeutic approaches note his emphasis on a person-to-person relationship and on empathy, warmth, and a nonjudgmental stance as sufficient conditions for therapeutic change. This did not create “the empath” as an identity type, but it did elevate empathic attunement into a moral and therapeutic ideal. Once empathy became a therapeutic virtue, culture could more easily convert it into a self-description and then into a heroic role.

Add attachment theory and trauma discourse and the internet theory becomes even more combustible.

Attachment theory explains how early relationships shape emotional regulation, security, and responses to threat. In broad popular translation, that becomes an interpretive lens for why one person pursues, soothes, or over-attunes, while another withdraws, controls, or destabilizes. Again, the move is not wholly false. It is one more example of partial truth migrating into a simplified map.

A person with strong sensitivity, fear of rupture, or hyper-attunement may indeed be easier to manipulate. But “easy to manipulate because highly relational” is not the same as “empath” in the mystical or identity-heavy internet sense.

By the time the terms reach late self-help culture, they have become market-ready. This is where “the empath” becomes not merely a capacity but a brandable self. Judith Orloff’s The Empath’s Survival Guide and related materials are a clean sign of that transition.

Whether one cares about her framework or not, the existence of this literature shows that “empath” had become a consumer identity category, complete with self-help strategy, daily practices, and niche audience. The scholar’s term had become the buyer’s term.

The Brand is the Bias

Then the platform era took over. Marshall McLuhan’s old line that “the medium is the message” hits near the mark, and Neil Postman’s critique of television matters even more now than when he wrote it. Amusing Ourselves to Death argued television reduces public discourse because the medium privileges alluring visual imagery. McLuhan argued that the form of a medium shapes the scale and character of human association. Once psychology migrates from books and clinics into short video, thumbnail theology, voiceover confession, and endlessly recommended clips, the medium does not merely distribute the ideas. It edits them in advance.

The ideas must become emotionally legible at speed. They must be titleable. They must be repeatable by strangers. They must survive without context.

Walter Ong’s work on orality and literacy adds another layer. Ong argued that oral and literate cultures form thought differently. In broad terms, literacy stabilizes, externalizes, and slows the word; oral performance is more situational, participatory, and communal. Digital media now creates a strange hybrid: infinitely reproducible speech-like performance without the accountability of embodied presence, joined to searchable text without the discipline of textual study.

In the old print age, ideas had to endure under slow reading. In the platform age, ideas can win by cadence, face, and the feeling of recognition.

Careful What You Wit For

This is where the Narcissist-Empath myth explodes. It is tailor-made for digital media. It offers heroes and villains. It turns painful ambiguity into legible polarity. It helps viewers interpret their own suffering in real time.

It offers a grammar of survival.

The Narcissist-Empath dialectic answers the ache of bewilderment with a plausible mythos - a story. It says, in effect, “The confusion was not confusion. It had a type. You had a type. Now you can see.” And, most importantly, “It wasn’t your fault.”

That is potent juju. As psychobabble, it is potent medicine when the categories outrun evidence or become self-sealing. The user does not merely learn a pattern. You acquire a role.

The scholarship degrades step by step.

First, a term leaves its home discipline. Second, it is moralized or personalized. Third, it is turned into a personality-role pair. Fourth, it is distributed by creators whose incentive is not scholarly precision but retention.

Next, it is dramatized through examples optimized for emotional certainty. Then, it is detached from original texts. Finally, it is voiced by borrowed authorities.

The internet’s current phase becomes a dark web of self-reinforcing pathology loop.

Shallow Fake

Search results today show videos such as:

• “When the Narcissist Realizes the Empath Has Learned Their Game | Carl Jung Philosophy,”

• “When an Empath Leaves, Toxic People Lose THIS | Carl Jung,”

• “The Narcissist’s Last Desperate Move When You Break Free | Jordan Peterson Motivational Speech,”

• “When a Narcissist Hurts You, God Strikes with 5 Severe Punishments | C.S. Lewis’s Messages.”

Some of these descriptions explicitly state that they use AI-generated voices or are “inspired by” the supposed thinker rather than authentic recordings. Whatever individual channel ownership may be, the pattern is visible in the open: borrowed names, synthetic voice or style, and algorithmic packaging around relationship polarity.

That is not a minor corruption. It is a doctrinal problem in the order of knowledge itself.

C.S. Lewis did not author internet sermons on Narcissists and Empaths. Jordan Peterson’s real body of work is not identical to the AI-motivational material circulating under his face and name, no matter how effective it may be. The digital user does not meet these authorities through bibliography or context. You meet them through the machine’s fluent resurrection of recognizable masks.

The authority survives while the author disappears. The face remains; authorship collapses.

YouTube itself now requires creators to disclose content that is meaningfully altered or synthetically generated when it appears realistic, and it has also updated privacy standards to allow requests for removal of synthetic or altered content simulating an identifiable person’s face or voice.

Those rules exist because the platform recognizes the problem. But the rule also reveals the scale of the disorder: the medium now assumes that realistic synthetic persons will circulate. The viewer must actively ask whether a person ever actually said what his face now says.

UNESCO has called this a “crisis of knowing,” and the phrase is apt. Reuters Institute reported in 2025 that trust in AI answers among those who encounter them is moderate, not absent, while broader digital news reporting showed continuing struggles of trust and engagement in the news ecosystem. (Disclaimer: AI found that Reuters note and I did not bother to double check it.)

In other words, modern users inhabit a mixed environment of partial trust, partial suspicion, informational overload, and weakened authority structures. Into that environment the Narcissist/Empath polemic provides a perfectly optimized theory of relationship harm: memorable, reusable, morally charged, therapeutically flavored, algorithmically amplified, and often voiced by synthetic elders.

This is why the theory feels both like revelation and like propaganda. It can tell the truth about manipulation. But it can also smuggle in fantasy.

Its strongest claims are often the behavioral ones: selective framing, blame inversion, lack of reciprocity, contempt under correction, emotional exploitation, image management, refusal of shared reality. Its weakest claims are often the identity ones: you are an empath; they are a narcissist; this always happens; your role is the sacred sufferer; their role is the demonic exploiter; the pattern is total.

Once the labels harden into total identity, the framework becomes difficult to falsify. It becomes a story that can interpret everything in advance.

Rewind

That is the point at which biblical categories become more trustworthy than internet categories. The Bible does not lack moral clarity. It has more of it than modern therapy culture. But its categories are straighter.

Proverbs speaks of the upright and the crooked, the wise and the scoffer, the faithful and the treacherous. Those are not sterile labels. They are moral descriptions of persons as known by their path, speech, response to correction, treatment of neighbor, and relation to truth. They are not dependent on platform virality. They do not require borrowed celebrity authority. They do not need a synthetic C.S. Lewis to make them sound wise.

The categories of upright and crooked are especially useful because they stay close to reality.

“Crooked” names deviation from straightness. It names what happens when speech bends, when motives distort, when facts are cut and rearranged, when a line that should run true is forced into a protecting curve. “Upright” names alignment. It is not perfection. It is straight dealing. It is willingness to stand in the light, to hear correction, to let words mean what they mean, to seek reconciliation without twisting reality in order to preserve self.

Those are better categories because they are morally serious without pretending to be clinical diagnoses. They describe what is happening, not merely what tribe of content one has joined.

This does not mean the modern frameworks are worthless. They can still serve as secondary pattern-recognition tools. If a podcast or video uses “narcissist” and what it actually describes is crooked handling of reality, the hearer can extract the useful material. If it uses “empath” and what it means is someone inclined toward care, attunement, and reconciliation, that too may carry partial truth.

But the hearer must keep the biblical frame primary and let the modern frame be filtered, rather than enthroned. The question is no longer, “Is this person clinically a narcissist?” The sharper question becomes:

• Is this speech upright or crooked?

• Is this path straight or bent?

• Does this person move toward truth under correction, or away from it?

Those are older questions. Better questions. Harder to game.

Still Standing

The collapse of information in Western civilization is therefore not merely the collapse of facts. It is the collapse of provenance, genre, and authority.

Writing once forced endurance, citation, and slow confrontation with text. Audio restored voice but weakened review. Video intensified charisma and emotional recognition. Digital platforms dissolved sequence and replaced it with feed logic.

Generative AI now dissolves the distinction between witness and simulation. The result is a public that often receives moral psychology as entertainment, therapy as prophecy, and synthetic authority as wisdom.

McLuhan and Postman saw the medium problem early. AI has radicalized it.

So the task now is not to become anti-technology in some simplistic sense. The task is to recover discernment.

That means asking at every stage:

• What is the source?

• What discipline does this term come from?

• What changed when it crossed over?

• What incentives govern the current speaker?

• Is this explanation clarifying behavior or manufacturing identity?

• Is it testing itself against reality, or creating a closed loop?

• Does it move me toward sobriety, repentance, and straight dealing, or toward intoxicating certainty?

The “narcissist versus empath” theory rose because it gives language to many people who have genuinely been destabilized. That should not be mocked.

It names real pain. But because it rose through the machinery of digital simplification, it tends to overstate, over-identify, and over-dramatize.

It is strongest when it says, “Some people twist words, invert blame, and exploit relational goodwill.” It is weakest when it says, “Here is the final binary by which all your suffering can now be decoded.”

Biblical discernment is sterner and safer. It lets a man call crooked what is crooked. It lets him prize the upright without canonizing himself. It lets him step away from treachery without needing to claim infallible psychological omniscience. It gives him moral clarity without surrendering to internet mythology.

And in an age where dead voices can be made to preach new doctrines, that older straightness is not a retreat from modern knowledge. It is the condition for using modern knowledge without being ruled by it.

Straight Ahead

The future will likely produce even more persuasive simulations: more AI Jordans, more AI Lewises, more synthesized sages explaining human wounds in perfect cadence.

The answer is not merely better warning labels. The answer is recovering a people able to judge words by truth rather than by fluency, by fruit rather than by virality, and by uprightness rather than by charisma.

In that sense, the problem is not finally technological. It is moral and civilizational.

We have built machines that can mimic wisdom while our culture has grown less capable of testing wisdom against the straight edge of reality. This is where “upright” and “crooked” are better than the fashionable polarity. They do not deny the reality of manipulation. They do not deny that some people repeatedly bend truth while others genuinely seek communion. They simply refuse to outsource discernment to psychobabble.

They restore the moral center. They let a man hear a modern framework, take what is true, and throw the rest away. In a collapsing information order, that is not a small gain.

It is the one discipline by which a normal person can remain sane.

It is not arriving politely. It is not asking for permission. You can refuse to use it, but you cannot refuse to live inside what it is changing.

AI is already an environment reorganizing everything around you.

There are many mistakes being made right now. But one of the most subversive is treating artificial intelligence the same way they treated smartphones and social media, as though it were an option to evaluate, sample, and then choose to either integrate or ignore.

Smartphones are not going away, and neither is language modeling.

AI is not a device. It is a pressure system. It compresses time, lowers the cost of thinking labor, and dissolves boundaries that used to protect professions, institutions, and identities. It is altering the terrain of every industry on the planet.

The question is not whether or not you want to enter the AI age. The question is whether or not you will fight to master the change, or be carried into it kicking and screaming.

The Compression of Work

For most of modern history, knowledge work was gated by time, training, and access. To research well required libraries, credentials, and long apprenticeship. To write clearly required years of practice. To synthesize information required experience and often institutional backing.

That is the structure that is collapsing under the weight of “compute.” AI systems now perform first-pass research, draft-level writing, summarization, translation, and even structured reasoning at near-zero cost. What used to take days now takes minutes. What used to require a specialist now requires a prompt.

The immediate reaction of fear is predictable. The scribes didn’t like the printing press either.

Some of that fear is justified. Certain forms of work will be reduced or eliminated. So, if your value is threatened, of course you feel exposed. If you have found your niche producing drafts, compiling information, or performing repeatable analytical tasks, the floor is rising rapidly. But this is only part of the picture.

The deeper change is not that work is disappearing. It is that value is shifting upward.

When the cost of producing an answer drops to near zero, the power of asking the right question becomes everything. When drafts are cheap and manifold, good judgment and editing for wisdom becomes expensive. When information is abundant, trust becomes scarce.

We all feel this first as instability. Tasks that once felt solid now feel uncertain. Skills that once carried weight now feel lighter. The sense that “I know what I do, and it matters” is eroding under the marching boots of automation.

This is not an indictment of your past. It is a reordering of the present.

The Dissolving of Expertise

There was a time when expertise was protected by friction. You needed access to knowledge, and knowledge was not evenly distributed. That created natural hierarchies.

But AI flattens this layer. A motivated novice can now access explanations, frameworks, and examples that previously required formal training. The distance between amateur and professional is shrinking. But this does not eliminate true expertise. It exposes it.

Now, the credential is worth nothing. Now, you have to actually know what you are doing.

Shallow knowledge is indistinguishable from AI output. Deep knowledge is no easier to come by. The knowledge worker who can only repeat is easily replaced by an assembly line that can do so instantly. But this same change makes the person who can see structure, make distinctions, and apply judgment under uncertainty all the more valuable.

It is dangerous, to be sure, and the danger is subtle. Many will mistake access for understanding. They will believe that because they can generate competent language, they possess competence. This is an illusion: fluency without depth.

The correction will come through consequence. Decisions made on shallow synthesis will fail under real conditions. The market, the institution, and the household must still solve for the real world difference between output and wisdom.

As challenging as this will be, I do not think we are aided by fearing the exposure. Much less can we avoid it by decrying it as a boogeyman. Rather, we must face it, welcome it (with applied prudence), and clarify all the more where our real foundations are rooted.

The Revaluation of the Human

As AI becomes capable of more, the definition of “human value” does not shrink. It sharpens. What cannot be easily automated stands out all the more brightly. Embodiment matters. Presence matters. Responsibility matters. Moral judgment matters. The ability to stand behind a decision and bear its consequences matters.

AI can generate options. But it cannot bear weight. This is where the real danger lies. As with the smartphone, resisted at first, then later mass adopted without thought, the average person will be tempted to outsource not only tasks, but thinking itself. We already do so by scrolling mindlessly through the algorithms on Facebook, X and elsewhere. We already let the system, the feed, show us what to believe, teach us how to interpret, call to act on how to respond.

The convenience is real. The danger is sleeping on the opportunity.

Losing the habit of judgment means dependency. Dependency in a time of rapid change is instability.

Thus, the preparation required of Christians now is not merely technical. It is moral and intellectual. We must learn how to use these systems without surrendering our agency. We must be able to test outputs, to question assumptions, to recognize when something is plausible but false, smooth but empty, confident but wrong.

This is a call to wisdom. It is a demand for discipline.

What You Cannot Avoid

There are several things you cannot avoid, no matter your position.

You cannot avoid interaction. AI is already embedded in the systems you use: search, communication, software, education, medicine, finance. You will encounter it whether you seek it or not.

You cannot avoid comparison. Your work, your writing, your thinking will increasingly be measured against outputs that are fast, polished, and readily available. Even if you do not use AI, others will.

You cannot avoid acceleration. Decision cycles will shorten. Expectations for responsiveness will increase. The pace at which information moves through your field will rise.

You cannot avoid exposure. Weaknesses in reasoning, gaps in knowledge, and inconsistencies in thought will be easier to surface when baseline competence is widely available.

To pretend otherwise is to choose blindness.

What You Do Not Need to Fear

Fear thrives where categories are unclear.

You do not need to fear that your worth is tied to your productivity. That was always the fragile foundation of modernism. If your identity is anchored in what you produce, any technological shift will feel like a threat. When it is anchored in something deeper, like who you are before your Creator, now your work can change without collapsing your person.

You do not need to fear learning. Many resist AI because it feels like an admission that the world has moved on without them. In reality, it is an invitation to re-engage. The barrier to entry is lower than previous technological shifts. Discipline is required, but the potential is accessible to all.

You do not need to fear being late. The window for thoughtful, grounded adoption is still open. What matters is not being first, but being rightly formed. What matters is not whether or not AI is used, but whether the choice is yours.

What You Must Prepare For

Preparation is clarity.

Understand what these systems are good at: pattern recognition, language generation, synthesis across large datasets, rapid iteration (learning Greek and Hebrew!). Then, understand their limits: lack of true understanding, susceptibility to error, absence of moral grounding.

With that in mind, the next step is to rebuild your relationship to your own work.

If your value has been in producing what can now be generated cheaply, you must reorient toward what cannot. That may mean deeper expertise, more direct responsibility, closer proximity to real-world consequences, or more integrated roles that combine multiple skills. If the robot can do your job, then use it now to help you do your job better than ever.

Cultivate judgment. Learn where the robot is right, and where the robot is wrong. Become indispensable.

This is not abstract. It is the ability to ask: Is this true? Is this relevant? What is missing? What are the second-order effects? What does this mean in practice? What does it cost? Who bears that cost?

Anchor yourself. Asking good questions cannot be outsourced. So, strengthen your voice. As language becomes easier to produce, distinct, grounded, and disciplined language becomes more valuable. Not louder, not more frequent, but clearer. Words carry weight because they are tied to reality, not just generated from patterns.

Acceleration will destabilize those who are not rooted. When everything around is changing, fixed points are priceless. For the Christian, this is Scripture, the person of Jesus Christ, the life of the Church, the givenness of creation, the reality of sin and redemption.

Without anchors, the wind becomes drift. With the anchor, the wind is how you navigate.

The Shape of What Comes Next

The next era will not be defined by who uses AI and who does not. It will be defined by how it is used, and under what authority. There will be those who use it to amplify noise, to produce more without substance, to simulate understanding that has no meat. But there will also be those who use it to sharpen thought, to test ideas, to extend reach without diluting the center. There will be institutions that adopt it uncritically and dissolve into managerial efficiency without moral clarity. There will be institutions that reject it entirely and become increasingly disconnected from the world they are called to serve.

Between these extremes is a narrow way.

Enter it.

Decide now that if you’re on the internet, you must develop technical competence without surrender to technocracy’s judgments. Choose to adopt without absorption. Accept acceleration without haste. Don’t be rigid: have conviction.

As the pressure increases, face the same questions as those of old, who faced radio, TV and websites:

• How do we adopt these tools without losing what is essential?

• What changes are necessary, and what must remain untouched?

• Where are we exposed, and where do we have strength?

• How do we speak, lead, and act with clarity in a landscape that is shifting beneath our feet?

Failing to answer these questions on your own means that someone else will answer them for you. Don’t bend down and let them run you. Grab hold of your own uprightness. Reject hype-driven implementation and generic digital transformation. But don’t miss the chance to forge ahead with grounded, morally serious engagement with the AI age as Christians.

I’m not saying it will be easy. I am saying that, in a very real way, we do not have a choice. So choose the agency you still have.

Opting out of tomorrow is not an option.

The argument stands or falls on this axis. On one side of this distinction, everything collapses into either tyranny or chaos. On the other side, you recover structure, responsibility, and life that can actually endure.

Life Is Not Fair

What passes in American culture for “fairness” has quietly shifted from justice to flattening. The phrase “all men are created equal” has been severed from its theological root under the image of God and repurposed into a denial of differentiation itself. Equality has abandoned station under the Father and forged itself into equality of role, which is equality of capacity, which is inevitably equality of authority.

The result is not dignity but disorder.

Scripture does not speak this way. The world of the Bible is structured, ranked, designed, patriarchal underneath the Fatherhood of God. Kings rule. Masters govern. Fathers bear responsibility. Everything is rooted in trust.

This does not mean those in any office or station are ontologically superior. There are nincompoops everywhere. But better a nincompoop whose household remains in order under the fear of God than a town in mutiny because everyone in it has rebelled against the natural law of headship.

A Kingdom Divided

Authority is not a personal decoration. It is a burden carried for the sake of those beneath it. Both the Small and Large Catechisms of Dr. Luther press this point firmly.

The Fourth Commandment is not merely about politeness toward parents. It establishes the entire architecture of human existence is designed under God. Father reigns as the primal office, and mother stands beside him. From there, all other offices unfold: magistrates, rulers, pastors, and masters.

All of these Luther calls “fathers.” To honor them is to recognize God in the office, God in the power, God in the order. The Pantokrator rules not through a formless crowd, but in peace.

This by no means sanctifies corruption, nor lauds men (or women) who abuse their offices. But the sharp distinction, as a matter of the Law, curbs our fleshly tendencies lest we make bad situations worse by repaying evil with evil. Rather, as the Apostle says, the Son’s better Way overcomes evil with good.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God… Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men.

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. - Romans 12

The Clean Line

• Rightful authority is accountable; restrained; oriented toward the good of those under its care; bearing weight rather than extracting privilege, and, before all these things, given. It is bestowed. It is entrusted.

• Corrupt authority is self-serving; unstable; abusive; detached from truth; using position as shield rather than responsibility, and, along with all these things, taken. It is seized. It is stolen.

To perceive the second does not grant the right to do the same. It means it is time to call on a yet higher authority still.

Now this is the meaning of this commandment: that no one should harm another for any evil deed, even though he has fully deserved it. For where punishment is to be administered, it is not the office of any individual, but of the authorities alone.

If you suffer wrong, do not resort to violence. But go to the judge and let him decide it… If you will not do this, then keep still and suffer the wrong.

For where everyone took it upon himself to avenge himself, there would be no end of violence, and the world would become a desert. - The Large Catechism, 5th Commandment 180-188

To reject this, both the willingness to endure wrong and the trust placed in rightful order, is to reject the theology of justice itself. It is to rebel against the structure of reality.

Most importantly, it is not to say that you must go to the county clerk against your neighbor, nor complain to your pastor against your brother. It is to say that prayer is the root and seat of your truest appeal. The God who judges justly is not sleeping, and His ears are open to your cry.

The Bitter Moment

Modern egalitarianism refuses this outright.

It treats hierarchy as the problem, rather than corruption within hierarchy. So it swings the axe at the root rather than repents of the log in its own eye. Every difference in role is suspected of being an insult to value. Every claim to leadership by inheritance is labeled oppression. Calls to obedience are termed threats, and privilege is something to be ashamed of.

The result in our neighborhoods is predictable. Where no one is permitted to lead, leadership does not disappear. It degrades. Where good men are prevented from exercising their power, bad men go about unchecked, and foolish women are unleashed to call out at every seat.

Folly sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the highest places of the city, to call to those who pass by, who go straight on their way: “Whoever is [c]simple, let him turn in here.”

As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, “Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of hell. Proverbs 9

Power that is informal, unaccountable, emotional, and manipulative is far more dangerous than a tyrant sitting on a throne for all to see. It does not vanish into a flattened Eden. It goes underground and poisons the well.

A World without Fathers

Where fatherhood is stripped of authority, it is not replaced by equality. It is replaced by drift. Children do not become free. They become unanchored. The household becomes a negotiation chamber governed by moods rather than a structure governed by truth. The mother is pressed into compensating roles she was never meant to carry alone. The children learn early that resistance yields control.

This is the seedbed of youth rebellion culture: not strength pushing against strength, but instability pushing against a vacuum. A child who has never been required to obey will not suddenly acquire that capacity in adulthood, and a nation built of such children will find itself at odds with… everything.

Remove the formation God teaches us in the Fourth Commandment, and you produce a people, men and women alike, who experience all structure as hostility. They cannot distinguish between a rightful command and an unfair abuse because they have never lived under stability long enough to learn the difference.

So they react to hierarchy itself.

Not to tyranny. To hierarchy. Or, as it is said today, “Patriarchy.”

They hear “father,” “husband,” “king,” “master,” and translate it immediately into domination, tyranny and abuse. There is no category for order, care, disciplined restraint, and strength exercised as service. The only reference point is failure, so they universalize and project it onto all others.

Therein’s The Rub

If we cannot tolerate the existence of rank, we cannot function in any serious domain of life on this planet. Every meaningful structure—family, church, military, craft, business—requires differentiation of role. Someone leads. Someone follows. Often the same person does both, depending on the layer of the structure.

To reject that outright is not moral clarity. It is incapacitation.

Beneath that demoralization, beneath that disempowering, is not an anarchal dream of peace. It is susceptibility to those who have no conscience. It is a world filled with even more distrust, formed by betrayal. Even more insecurity, formed by comparison. Even more refusals to submit, formed by fear that submission means erasure.

This is where the “manosphere” is coming from.

The following video uses language that may be offensive and is intended to inform the reader about what the manosphere portends. I in no way am promoting the statements or language used by the influencer, but am attempting to warn the reader of what we can expect more of from young men’s culture as things continue to collapse.

These are real wounds. And when they harden into doctrine, they produce a culture that cannot sustain itself. They build a house divided.

Order is not Optional.

Hierarchy is not an invention. It is the design of responsibility, distributing itself across unequal capacities for the sake of the weak. Some men are more stable. Some have greater foresight. Some bear weight more consistently. To deny them the authority to act in accordance with those capacities does not produce fairness. It produces paralysis.

I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them. - Romans 12

At the same time, those who bear authority will be judged more strictly by God. There should be no mistake about this. “To whom much is given, much will be required.” That is not Spiderman, but Jesus.

The standard is raised, not lowered. Scripture never grants authority without binding it to accountability to God’s own. The king answers to God. The father answers to God. The master answers to God.

Authority is never autonomous. It is derivative.

But this is the balance the modern mind refuses to hold: we don’t believe in the judgment of God. We do not trust that He will handle it, nor do we fear His retribution if we take matters into our own hands.

Instead, we cat-call for protection from abuse without submission to order. We cry for the benefits of structure without the cost of obedience. We complain about inequality without offering dignity.

We seek identity in making all things appear identical.

The vision collapses under its own weight.

Repentance is a Gift

A body cannot live without a head. A people cannot endure without righteous reign. A child cannot mature without discipline.

And a man cannot lead without first learning to obey.

The path forward for men everywhere is not a return to harshness or domination. It is not to join the crowds calling all women stupid or building up class warfare between the sexes. It is a return to rightful authority: ordered, accountable, restrained, and real.

Godly.

Honor where honor is due. Resist where corruption is evident. But do not confuse the existence of hierarchy with its abuse.

One is the condition for life.

The other is its distortion.

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. - Romans 12

The scene is not religious in the way we expect. It is administrative, violent, procedural.

A man is almost torn apart by a mob. A Roman officer intervenes. Intelligence is gathered. Troops are deployed. A prisoner is transferred.

Under guard, in the middle of the night.

The Clear Window of Providence

Not through sentiment. Through office.

The modern instinct is to divide life into sacred and secular, as if God governs churches while the rest of the world runs on neutral mechanisms. Scripture does not permit that. The state, the office, the uniform, and the chain of command are not outside divine action. They are instruments within it.

Claudius Lysias did not confess Christ. He did not preach the gospel. He did not even fully understand the theological dispute surrounding Apostle Paul. But he understood his duty.

Order must be maintained. Citizens must not be murdered without trial. Rome does not yield to mobs. That was enough.

Two hundred soldiers. Seventy horsemen. Two hundred spearmen. A night extraction. A letter to the governor. Every action was vocational, not devotional. Yet every action served the preservation of the gospel’s witness.

Providence did not bypass his office. It operated through it.

I Chose You

Leadership is forged not in chosen missions but in imposed burdens.

Lysias did not choose Jerusalem’s volatility. He inherited it. A province on edge; factions ready to riot; zealots willing to kill; rumors of insurrection still fresh from prior rebellions. His post was not clean. It was combustible.

The “cross” of vocation is rarely elegant. It is inconvenient, often thankless, sometimes dangerous. The temptation is to escape it, reinterpret it, or weaponize it for personal advancement.

But this burden is a forge. Unchosen responsibility strips illusion. It removes the ability to perform for approval. It forces a man to act according to what is, not what feels right.

In that stripping, something steadier emerges, an alignment not with self, but with order. Constraint births discipline. Pressure yields clarity.

Restraint of Evil

The contrast in Acts 23 is not subtle. On one side stand forty men bound by an oath to murder. On the other stands a Roman officer bound by duty to prevent it. Both are driven. Both are decisive. Only one is righteous in outcome.

The conspirators embody what can be called the religion of the sword. They are certain; they are unified; they are willing to sacrifice themselves. But their zeal is untethered from truth. It is willfulness dressed as devotion. They do not seek justice. They seek control.

Lysias, by contrast, does not need to be morally perfect to act rightly. His task is narrower and therefore more achievable: restrain evil; preserve process; protect the individual from the crowd.

This is the first use of the law in action. The state does not save souls. It prevents chaos. It holds the line so that life can continue.

And that is no small thing.

Respect the Office

When Lysias writes to Antonius Felix, he addresses him as “Most Excellent.” This is not flattery. It is recognition.

Felix himself is compromised: corrupt, self-serving, unstable. History remembers him as a man who “ruled with the mind of a slave,” using power for gain rather than stewardship. Yet the office he occupies was real.

Lysias does not collapse the distinction. He reports facts. He honors jurisdiction. He transfers responsibility upward. He does not attempt to become more than his role. He does not shrink from it either.

This is jurisdictional integrity. The leader who respects boundaries, who owns the capacity to follow, strengthens the system. The leader who ignores order corrodes it, even if his intentions appear noble.

Against both the mob and the machinery stands Paul, and his posture is neither violent nor passive. He does not cry out conspiracy. He does not seek to overthrow the Romans. He works within what is while bearing witness to what lies beyond. He uses his citizenship not to dominate but to ensure truth is heard.

This is love.

Not sentiment. Mercy under orders.

1 Corinthians defines it plainly. Love is not loud. It does not parade itself. It does not rejoice in wrongdoing. It endures. It tells the truth without needing to crush the opponent. It is the opposite of the oath-bound killers. It is also distinct from mere professionalism.

Love fulfills what office cannot. Office restrains evil. Love transforms the man.

Control or trust? Vengeance or mercy? Mob or order? Urgency and outrage, or righteousness by necessity?

The test is not how intensely you feel. The test is what you produce.

Chaos masquerades as justice when it abandons order. Authority becomes tyranny when it abandons integrity. The line between them is not emotion but structure rightly held.

Your vocation sits directly on that line.

Three Anchors

1. Hold to fact over faction; do not let noise override reality. The moment truth bends to pressure, justice collapses.

2. Respect the office above the personality; even flawed structures can serve good when rightly used. Contempt for order accelerates decay.

3. Restrain evil before attempting to perfect the world; protection of the innocent is prior to ideological victory.

Lysias did not know he was part of a larger story. He did not see Rome as a channel for the Gospel. He simply acted as a Roman tribune should. That was enough for God to use him.

The same holds true now. Your work, rightly held, becomes a place where order stands against chaos, where truth survives pressure, where mercy is given space to operate. Not because you transcend your role. Because you inhabit it fully.

You Don’t Pick a Gift

The deep lesson in Paul’s midnight transfer is not only that God can rescue His servants. It is that He often does so without removing the burden.

Paul is still under guard. He is still accused. He is still being carried deeper into a trial he did not choose. Yet the 470-man escort reveals something essential about the Christian life: the Father’s providence does not always appear as escape. More often it appears as preservation.

We do not choose the hour, the pressure, the false accusation, the institutional trial, the family burden, or the season of humiliation. We do not choose the outside conditions in which faith must live. But in Jesus Christ, the meaning of those burdens is redeemed. What would otherwise remain curse, absurdity, or collapse is taken up into a deeper discipleship. The cross is still heavy. The road is still hard. But it is no longer empty. You are no longer alone. You are not walking toward nothing.

Paul is not in control. The conspirators are not in control. Felix is not in control. Even Lysias, competent as he is, can only act within the limits of his office. Above them all stands God, moving through family loyalty, military duty, legal process, sleepless vigilance, and the strange mercy of pagan steel.

That is the comfort. God’s care is not fragile. He is not limited to overtly pious instruments. He can use a nephew, a centurion, a tribune, or an empire to carry His child where He wants that child to go.

So the question is not whether you will be given an unchosen cross.

You will.

The question is which spirit will govern you beneath it. Will it be the starving fury of men who think vengeance is righteousness? Or will it be the patient trust of Christ, who endured injustice without surrendering to hatred?

Paul’s life points us to the more excellent way.

He does not reach for the sword. He does not sanctify bitterness. He bears witness, receives what comes from the Father’s hand, and keeps moving toward the life of the world to come.

So also, the road before you, however severe, is not the road to abandonment. It is the road on which God Himself goes before you.

What Next: Repentance, StarFall, and the Work Ahead

As most of you reading this are well aware, something broke loose in 2020, and it has not slowed down. You can feel it without needing a headline to tell you. The center is not holding because the heart is not right. Greed has hardened into instinct; truth is bent until it snaps; even the most basic realities of the body are treated as raw material for ideology.

This is not just cultural drift. It is spiritual sickness.

And the answer is not strategy first. It is repentance.

Not abstract repentance. Not finger-pointing repentance. Personal repentance.

StarFall 2029: Building, Not Just Reacting

Out of that recognition, the direction becomes clear. I am not interested in being another voice reacting to the noise. I am building.

StarFall 2029 is the frame for that work. It is not just a podcast. It is a way of speaking into a world that no longer hears straight lines. Think less lecture, more signal through story. Less institutional tone, more War of the Worlds, using the strange, the sci-fi edge, the sense that something is off, to get underneath the surface and hit what is actually real.

The podcast will carry that. It will be sharper, more distilled, pulling together years of theological work and pressing it into something that lands clean and hard. Not watered down. Not padded. Focused.

Music is becoming part of the same push. I have written for years: hymns, fragments, lines that never quite made it into finished form. Now the tools exist to close that gap. Using platforms like Suno, I can take what was partial and bring it to completion. The goal is not novelty. The goal is to put durable truth into forms people will actually carry with them, into our ears, into my memory.

But unfortunately Spotify will not let me release music within a podcast. So you will have to either follow me on Suno while I develop it, or wait for the eventual release of my albums. (They’re coming!)

The Machine and the Word

Then there are the experiments. Tools like NotebookLM let me take dense material—years of treatment on something like the Worldview Everlasting work on Beatitudes (coming Tuesday to the StarFall podcast)—and reshape it without losing its core.

All of this is being built on a deeper layer that cannot be ignored. These systems (language models, so-called “AI”) are built on words. They map patterns, chase coherence, move toward what holds together under pressure.

Follow that far enough, and you run into a wall that is not a wall but a foundation.

If reality has a center, if truth is not just preference but structure, then any system that genuinely seeks truth will eventually converge on that center. The claim of Christianity is not that it is one story among many. It is that in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, reality itself is revealed.

That means something simple and unsettling. If the machine keeps moving toward what is most real, it does not get to stop at abstraction. It will be forced, in its own way, to reckon with the same question every man faces: what do you do with Jesus Christ?

This is not about baptizing technology. It is about recognizing that truth is not infinitely flexible. Even code runs into it.

I do not take this lightly.

Right now, I am working a day job for a stipend. It is honest work, and with God’s blessing it may grow into something more.

It may not.

It is also still possible that the Lord returns me to a parish, if and when the right things are brought into alignment. That door is not closed. It is simply not in my hands.

In the meantime, the work you are reading, hearing, and watching (the writing, the podcast, the music, the ongoing push into the digital field) does not sustain itself. It exists because you choose to stand with me in it.

I do not believe in “fans.” I do not believe in collecting “followers.” That language is hollow. It turns men into spectators and reduces real work into performance. I believe in brotherhood. I believe in fraternity. I believe in men and women who recognize what is being built and decide, quietly and without spectacle, to help carry it forward.

When you subscribe on Substack, or support through Patreon or SubscribeStar, you are not buying content. You are strengthening a man’s capacity to stand, to work, and to provide.

The pressures in front of us are not theoretical. Fuel moves everything, and when it tightens, everything tightens with it. Food follows. Stability follows. The margin narrows. You can already see the direction of travel.

So when you give—even something as simple as eight dollars a month—you are doing something far more significant than it looks on paper. You are helping secure the ground under my feet so that I can continue this work without compromise, and so that my family has a future that is not dependent on instability.

That is not small. It is not forgettable. It is not something I can treat casually.

And I do not intend to waste it.

So the direction is set.

Repent where you stand. Refuse the pull toward bitterness. Do not let the coldness of the age settle into your bones. Stay in the Word. Pray. Keep your footing.

And then build.

Use the tools in front of you. Speak clearly. Make things that carry weight. Refuse both the mob and the drift. Hold to what is true and put it into forms that can survive the noise.

The same God who moved a Roman cohort to carry one man to Rome is not absent now. He is not weaker now. The scale may look different, but the pattern has not changed. He works through means. He works through people who own their place.

So take yours.

Legalism shows up across eras and traditions: Platonic dualism; Stoic self-regulation; medieval canon law and rabbinic legal reasoning; Reformation theoretical dogmatism; Puritan moralism; modern bureaucratic positivism; and revolutionary collectivisms.

Different frames, same impulse: enforce conformity. Legalism builds a familiar scaffold: the policing of appearances. How you look becomes the rule.

But in exposing this false posture, we risk adopting one of our own. Opposing legalism carries its own hazard. Lists of wrong-thinkers quickly become weaponized in the ceaseless battle of self-justification, flattening whole movements and peoples into a single indictment to ensure an “us vs them” in which they are always and most surely the wrongest.

That is a categorical error, and a strategic failure.

How It Works is Simple and Corrosive:

1. Distinguish private faith from public sign;

2. Elevate the sign into a test;

3. Make social trust dependent on passing the test;

4. Institutionalize enforcement with tribunals, talebearers and reputation as a marketplace.

When that cycle tightens, freedom of conscience dies. In its place rises a performance economy, where virtue is signaled rather than formed, and the conversion of heart and mind is displaced by compliance.

The “Assault” on the West:

Because Western public order after the Reformation was built from mixed goods such as legal restraint, sacramental habit, and a guarded space for conscience, performance-policing cuts into the root. Once comparison logic, the sorting of “us” and “them,” seeps into education, media, party structures, and social networks, the civic goods of speech, worship, and dissent begin to give way. They do not vanish at once. They soften, then sink. What follows is a sense of pressure beneath the surface, ideological, technological, social, whether coordinated or not, but real in its effect.

What can we do about it?

• Re-teach distinctions. Conscience is neither private license nor public display. It is the place of accountability before God and neighbor.

• Recenter catechesis on conversion rather than conformity. Form habits of repentance, not the appearance of virtue secured by assent to shifting terms.

• Rebuild local liturgy as hospitality. Not pure theory but clear confession; not hidden knowledge but visible love; not theatrical worship but public Divine Service.

• Practice accountable life together and refuse anonymous policing. Doctrinal correction rarely occurs in comment threads; it takes root in embodied communities that bear one another’s burdens.

• Recover public theology that refuses fear-driven rhetoric. Name the idols that displace trust in God, rather than rehearsing grievances about distant others.

• Cultivate intellectual and spiritual discipline that restores trust in grammar, meaning, and charity. To resist the split between idea and life, receive the Word made flesh within the body of Christ, not as abstraction but as living reality.

A Doctrine against Polemicism:

Legalism is not a straight line but the claim that curved lines are the true straight. The Platonic elevates form over life; rabbinic and canon law harden community order into salvation; scholastic systematization promises that correct answers will purge away all false teachers; modern bureaucraticism foretells Eden by procedure; social media enforces compliance through the crowd.

Each stage has its goods. Each turns corrosive when the sign replaces reality, when the test replaces the truth. The fight is for form that serves life, not form that extinguishes it. The answer is not reaction but submission returned to the right place.

Conspiracy thinking thrives in fog. Remedy requires precision. At the edge of every false system lies the worship of posture. Legalism that treats appearances as sacred keeps rhetoric sharp and justice hard. It rewards the signal and neglects the substance.

When witness becomes measurable output, assurance drifts from trust in Christ to completion of assigned works. The form survives. The life thins. Loyalty is proven by performance. Trust collapses into fear.

So keep your conscience answerable to God, not to the demand for display. Refuse the economy of outrage where grace becomes a badge rather than a Way of being. Reject blanket imputations. Name sins and goods without flattening people into abstractions. Make confession concrete and local, where people are known and forgiveness is spoken between real people who one and all do not deserve it.

Otherwise we end up alone.

End that show. Live at the foot of the cross where none of us know what we do, but Christ our Lord has given us a more excellent Way.

Masculinity is Covenant Reality

Sergeant Hollaway spoke with gravity: masculinity is not fashion, mood, or posture. It is not a cultural accessory to be worn or discarded according to the spirit of the age.

Masculinity is covenant with reality.

A man binds himself to burdens that would otherwise crush the vulnerable. He accepts, whether praised or ignored, that some weights must be carried and some dangers must be faced.

“I will go where it is dangerous so they don’t have to.”

Civilization rests on such men.

Every functioning society has depended on the few who accept that contract without applause. They stand between danger and the defenseless, between chaos and order, between predators and the weak. When such men are numerous, nations stand. When they withdraw, nations decay. Debate Deborah or women in the military as much as you like; it does not alter the underlying fact. When the line breaks and the threat is real, it is the young men who are sent to hold it.

For a generation, American culture has mocked these instincts that once held the line against barbarism. We have recast masculinity as toxic. We have confused power with aggression, discipline with oppression, and responsibility with control. The message to those of us raised inside that moral fog was clear: shrink, soften, be quiet.

Go Away

Many of us obeyed.

But reality has a way of correcting lies. The law of God is good and wise, woven into the natural order, and it always reasserts itself over those dreamers who imagine they can unseat the Father from his throne.

Civilization cannot run on abstraction. Someone must carry the weight. Someone must pay the cost. Someone must confront the threat. Someone must take responsibility.

Then Deborah sent and called for Barak the son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali, and said to him, “Has not the Lord God of Israel commanded, ‘Go and deploy troops at Mount Tabor; take with you ten thousand men of the sons of Naphtali and of the sons of Zebulun; and against you I will deploy Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude at the River Kishon; and I will deliver him into your hand’?”

And Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go!”

So she said, “I will surely go with you; nevertheless there will be no glory for you in the journey you are taking, for the LORD will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.”

Scripture Alone: Asa the Builder

The story of King Asa is one example of masculine covenant rightly carried. He was not a perfect king, and in his latter days he failed to trust Jesus Christ as he should have. But when he came to the throne of Judah, the nation had drifted deep into compromise. Idols stood openly in the land. Corruption was ordinary. Covenant loyalty had grown thin.

Asa did not negotiate with the rot.

“Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of Jesus Christ his God.”

He removed the idols. He tore down the high places. He drove the abominations out of the land, beginning with his own house. Asa even removed his grandmother Maacah, the wife of Rehoboam and perhaps the granddaughter of Absalom, from her position as queen mother, because she had made an obscene image for worship. From the seat of royalty itself, corruption had been given honor.

We know almost nothing about Asa’s actual mother, the wife of Abijam. But what the text does make clear is that, from Solomon onward, the kings of Judah show a recurring pattern: women’s fancies became the conduits of compromise, and bent a faithful house away from covenant fidelity.

For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods … For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom[b] the abomination of the Ammonites. … Then Solomon built a [c]high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the hill that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the people of Ammon. And he did likewise for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.

Repentance is never easy. But Asa chose truth over comfort, reality over sentiment, and covenant over blood. The court intrigue must have been immense. His grandmother had helped shape the royal house through generations of decline.

Asa cut down her obscene image and burned it by the Brook Kidron.

The Result was Stability

Judah entered a long season of peace. Cities were fortified. The army grew strong. The nation prospered. Asa understood a principle every soldier learns early: peace is preserved by men who fight the right war.

Years later, the test came. A massive Ethiopian force marched against Judah. The record itself stresses the scale: a million men and hundreds of chariots. Judah stood badly outnumbered.

Asa did not collapse into fear, nor did he trust in numbers, weapons, or preparation alone.

He prayed:

“Jesus Christ, there is none besides you to help, between the mighty and the weak. Help us, Jesus Christ our God, for we rely on you.”

The battle was decisive. The invading force broke. Judah prevailed.

This is the right shape of masculine strength: prepared, disciplined, and humble before God. Asa carried that shape well. For decades he ruled with clarity, discipline, and loyalty.

But the story does not end there.

Learn from the Mistakes

Late in Asa’s life, another threat arose. The northern kingdom of Israel began fortifying the border in order to choke Judah’s movement and pressure its strength. Earlier in his reign, Asa had trusted Jesus Christ in the face of a vastly greater enemy. Now, older and more seasoned, he made a smaller, shrewder calculation. Instead of prayer, he reached for politics.

Asa stripped gold and silver from the temple treasury and sent it to a foreign king, buying an alliance to solve the problem. The strategy worked, at least outwardly. Israel’s pressure broke. But then the prophet Hanani came with a rebuke.

“Because you relied on the king of Syria and not on Jesus Christ your God, the army of the king of Syria has escaped you. Were not the Ethiopians a huge army? Yet you relied on Jesus Christ, and He delivered them into your hand. For the eyes of Jesus Christ run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is fully His.”

The warning is clear. Like Solomon before him, Asa’s strength shifted off its true center. The king who had once trusted God in the face of overwhelming danger now leaned on clever arrangements and visible leverage.

His response exposed a deeper problem: he did not repent. He imprisoned the prophet. Soon after, he was afflicted with a severe disease in his feet, and he sought physicians rather than God.

The man who had once stood firm ended his life diminished, not because he lacked strength, but because he had abandoned the source of it.

Masculinity Without Anchor

The point is not to condemn doctors, any more than it is to say that all women are worse than all men. The lesson of Asa’s life is simpler and sharper: covenant is superior to calculation. Honor is superior to desire. Truth is superior to fear.

Without that order, civilizations collapse into confusion.

Masculinity alone is not enough. Strength untethered from truth decays into pride, manipulation, and control. A man can win battles and still lose his soul if he forgets who gave him the strength to fight.

But a man who forgets that the burden is his to carry commits the deeper failure. A man must bear the weight. A man must guard his gate. A man must bear the cross.

Jesus Christ did not come as an abstract human possibility. He was not born a woman. He was born the King.

The Son of God came as the last Adam to do what the first Adam, and what Asa and Solomon after him, failed to do: keep covenant perfectly.

This does not demean women. It orders man and woman beneath the cross of Jesus Christ, each as created, each under God, each restored by the obedience of the Son. Just as the church is not diminished by being called the bride of Christ, masculinity is not corrupted by being named as a created and redeemed good.

‘So God created man … male and female he created them.’ From this passage we may be assured that God divided mankind into two classes, namely, male and female, or a he and a she. This was so pleasing to him that he himself called it a good creation [Gen. 1:31]. Therefore, each one of us must have the kind of body God has created for us. I cannot make myself a woman, nor can you make yourself a man; we do not have that power. But we are exactly as he created us: I a man and you a woman. Moreover, he wills to have his excellent handiwork honored as his divine creation, and not despised. The man is not to despise or scoff at the woman or her body, nor the woman the man. But each should honor the other’s image and body as a divine and good creation that is well-pleasing unto God himself.” Luther’s Works, vol. 45, The Christian in Society II

The Present Spirit

Sergeant Hollaway is right about the cultural moment we are living through.

Our long season of confusion about masculinity will end one way or another. History and Scripture both warn that such confusion rarely resolves without pain. The signs are already visible: collapsing institutions, declining birthrates, fragile communities, loud women and anxious young men in a culture that no longer knows how to honor strength without fearing it. That confusion will not be overcome by softer lies. It will be overcome by men who recover the courage to believe that strength is not merely permitted, but good.

That recovery can be corrupted. It can harden into oppression, backlash, and cruelty. It may come with real losses. But that danger does not make the alternative wise. The answer to distorted authority is not weakness. It is rightly ordered strength.

Responsibility is not oppression. Discipline is not cruelty. Courage is not toxicity.

Carrying the weight is not hatred.

Danger is faced by men willing to become dangerous to what threatens the innocent. Protecting the helpless is not a threat to them. Civilization is what happens when men make that promise.

And keep it.

Paul stands in the middle of accusation without flinching. The chamber is full of hostility. The air is political, religious, personal, and violent all at once. Men want him silenced, judged, struck, cornered. Yet he does not speak like a man trying to save a life he still possesses. He speaks like a man whose life is already surrendered.

That is part of the answer. Paul stood before hostile rooms because the world had already taken from him what it could take. Reputation; safety; belonging; comfort; approval; the hope of being understood by his own people. He had already lost the old life.

A man who has already died to the praise of men becomes very hard to intimidate.

But this alone does not explain his confidence.

A bitter man can also become fearless. A desperate man can become reckless. Paul is neither. His courage is not the courage of collapse. It is not numbness. It is not bravado. It is not the last defiance of a cornered animal. It is steadier than that.

It is Filial

Paul believes Jesus Christ has taken hold of him.

He believes that whatever men are doing around him, God is not improvising.

God is not watching from a distance.

God is for him.

So Paul can speak sharply to Ananias, perceive the fracture between Pharisee and Sadducee, endure the chaos that follows, and then, after the whole scene breaks open again into danger, receive the word that explains his backbone: “Be of good cheer, Paul.”

Not, “Paul, they are mistaken.” Not, “Paul, your pain is small.” Not, “Paul, this will get easier.” But: be of good cheer.

Christ does not first remove the conflict. He establishes you inside it.

Paul’s confidence comes not from odds, not from allies, not from visible momentum, not from public approval. His confidence comes from the Man standing nearer than the mob.

Jesus Christ does not say, in effect, “Try harder.” He says, “As you have testified of Me in Jerusalem, so must you bear witness also at Rome.”

Your suffering is not proof that God is against you. Your cannot be abandoned. The room full of enemies is a false judgement. Jesus Christ governs your path.

That kind of assurance makes a man difficult to terrify. Paul knows that he is not in the hands of the crowd in any final sense. He is not even finally in the hands of Rome. He is in the hands of Christ.

This is what gives Paul the courage to stop organizing his life around self-preservation. Having made peace with losing everything except Christ, fear lost its foothold. What could they threaten him with?

Shame? He bears the Name.

Pain? He has suffered before.

Death? To depart and be with Christ is gain.

Isolation? His Lord stood with him in the night.

The enemies surrounding him are real, but they are not ultimate.

We tend to think courage comes after the change. After support. After someone finally understands. Paul lives another order. Courage comes when a Christian knows whose he is. Cheer comes when Christ’s promise outweighs human hostility. Confidence comes when loss has already done its worst, and yet the Spirit of God remains.

Paul was not confident because he was naturally unshakable. He was confident because the resurrection had rearranged his reality. Because God was for him, then the many who were against him could rage, but they could not define him.

“Be of good cheer.” It is a command.

And this matters all the more because the age itself is not calming down. The world is full of quarrels. The economy keeps asking harder questions. Gold and silver have been swinging sharply in recent days, crypto remains split between panic and frenzy, and the South Pars gas field in Iran, one of the great energy anchors of the globe, has been caught up in the violence of the present war.

In that kind of moment, it would be easy to treat AI as one more threat, one more source of noise, one more mechanism for manipulation. Certainly AI carries real jeopardy. In the hands of the wicked, the vain, or the unwise, it can accelerate confusion, magnify deception, and reward imitation over truth. That danger is not imaginary.

But tools are still tools. And the tools now in our hands are becoming stronger by the month. What matters is who seizes them, and for what end. We have been here before. Early radio could carry nonsense, vanity, propaganda, and distraction. It could also carry preaching, teaching, song, and courage into places that older forms could not reach. AI has something of that same frontier quality. Those who take hold of it for the sake of Jesus Christ, for the sake of truth, for the sake of clear thinking and faithful witness, are going to find that it opens doors that would have seemed impossible only a short while ago.

A Musician’s Son

Yes, that is where this is going next.

You’ve seen me promoting Doxazomen, and maybe you’ve clicked on those Proverbs shanties by VD. But I finally got up the courage to pull out my old pile of poetry and hymn texts. I’ll just say… it’s coming. This single is the only taste you get until the debut album release some time in the next month or so.

Yes. I made it with the help of a computer and a “language model” called Suno. The preview hardly does it justice, and it’s the weakest song on the album so far.

Even though it’s from evil Google, NotebookLM will be hard to ignore, just as it is getting more difficult by the day to sleep on the ways computers, automation, and robotics are destabilizing and restructuring the workforce.

Reports around Meta this week pointed to the possibility of major layoffs tied to the immense cost and promised efficiencies of AI, a reminder that the people running the largest companies in the world are not bluffing when they say many familiar jobs are on the chopping block.

I felt a smaller but more immediate version of that reality myself while making phone calls for my day job with T&T sales, when I ran into my first two fully automated AI receptionists. These were not the old pre-recorded phone trees everyone has learned to endure. They were remarkable, able to understand my questions, respond intelligently, and route me to the right place inside the company with an ease that was frankly startling.

I am not calling this good in itself, and I do not pretend the consequences will be mild. I am saying the change is real, and it is already here.

While you still have access to the tools, it would be foolish not to learn them. More than that, using the tools to become better at what you already do may be one of the clearest ways left to prove your value where you are.

So no, I do not believe the answer is to let the age set the terms and then merely react to them. Better to build. Better to experiment. Better to learn the machinery before the machinery learns you. Better to use the tools in service of the Word than to spend all your energy complaining that the tools exist.

Civilization Is Built on Quiet Laws

Most of the rules that hold human society together are never written down.

They live in instinct, memory, and conscience. They are learned at dinner tables, in friendships, in churches, in the slow shaping of character. But when they disappear, as when a civilization collapses through the adoption of godless behaviors, people begin to experience something strange: relationships feel brittle, conversations become combative, and trust vanishes without anyone quite knowing why.

Scripture has always understood this. Long before modern psychology or etiquette manuals, the wisdom literature of the Bible described the invisible architecture that allows communities to endure. Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the teachings of Jesus Christ repeatedly insist that the health of a people depends less on formal laws than on the character habits people carry into everyday life.

These habits look small. In reality they are the social grammar of fraternity, philanthropy, and family.

Protecting Dignity, Guarding Trust

“If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.”

— Matthew 18:15

Jesus Christ assumes a principle older than the New Testament: correction must preserve dignity. Private rebuke restores relationship. Public rebuke easily becomes humiliation. The goal is not victory in argument but restoration of the person.

“Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered.”

Trust is preserved when a person refuses to expose what was given in vulnerability. Wisdom treats entrusted knowledge as something to guard, not something to circulate. How a person treats those who cannot repay them is a moral X-ray of the heart. Scripture consistently measures righteousness not by how one treats the powerful, but by how one treats the powerless.

The Discipline of Listening

“If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.”

Listening is a form of respect. Our inherited sin inclines us all to human instinct, to answer before understanding. But wisdom insists that attention must precede speech. Self-display corrodes humility and wounds those who struggle. Wisdom instructs a person to let honor arrive indirectly rather than manufacturing it through self-promotion.

Speech is power. Silence is discipline. Wisdom repeatedly ties maturity to the ability to hold words back rather than release them impulsively. Awareness of another person’s space and rhythms is a high form of love. Entering someone’s world for the good requires sensitivity, restraint, and respect for the life already unfolding there.

Leaving People Better

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who listen.”

Ephesians 4:29

Restraint in public is the place to begin. It is normal to feel a sudden urge to prove you are right the moment someone else is wrong. But wisdom recognizes that humiliation destroys far more than error does.

Rebuking a scoffer invites abuse, while correcting the wise strengthens them. The distinction is not merely intellectual. Public correction often turns learning into a contest for status. When dignity is threatened, the human instinct is to defend the self rather than to receive truth.

Wisdom therefore chooses the setting of correction carefully. Private conversation preserves the possibility of growth. Public embarrassment produces only resistance. This rule preserves fraternity because it tells every person in the room that their worth will not be casually exposed to shame.

When someone shares something personal, they are handing over a fragile piece of themselves. To repeat it later as humor or gossip may seem trivial, yet it quietly dismantles trust. The one who is faithful in spirit keeps a matter covered. This does not mean hiding wrongdoing. It means protecting the vulnerability someone placed in your care. Trust is rarely destroyed by a single dramatic betrayal. More often it dies through small moments of careless speech. A story repeated. A confidence turned into a punchline. A private fear used for social entertainment.

Character in Asymmetry

Fraternity requires disciplined memory. You remember what was shared, but you carry it with reverence.

Another key concerns how you treat those who offer you no advantage. Human beings are naturally tempted to display courtesy upward and indifference downward. Scripture constantly exposes this tendency. The prophets condemn those who honor the powerful while neglecting the poor. Jesus Christ teaches that kindness toward the least reveals the heart more clearly than public virtue.

When someone cannot reward you, your behavior is a true reflection of your character. Do you operate with strategy or with insight? Do you calculate advantage or benefit? Is your soul self-willed, or do you have the morale to choose the moral?

This is essential for philanthropy. Generosity is not about reputation but genuine compassion.

Listening

Conversation can be a quiet contest. Many people listen only long enough to prepare their reply. Attention collapses into performance.

Real relationship means being heard. Such listening requires restraint. It means allowing the other’s words to arrive fully before forming your own. It means letting silence exist without rushing to fill it.

This is not easy.

Attention is rare because it costs something. It requires surrendering the stage for a moment. Yet this surrender creates a priceless moment: people experience recognition rather than competition.

Families, friendships, and communities cannot flourish without this discipline. Secrets test loyalty more severely than public obligations. Anyone can speak well in open daylight. Loyalty is proven when knowledge that could easily be repeated is kept close, as a matter of honor.

Display

Success is not wrong. Scripture celebrates diligent work and the fruit that follows it. Yet wisdom warns against flaunting prosperity, especially before those who are struggling. The reason is simple: triumph displayed without sensitivity easily becomes humiliation to the observer.

Wealth can isolate a person as easily as poverty. If success becomes spectacle, it quietly announces superiority. People begin to feel measured rather than welcomed. Kindness, by contrast, recognizes the emotional landscape. It does not dim success out of false modesty. It simply refuses to turn success into theater.

A person who guards their tongue protects both themselves and others. Silence becomes an act of fidelity. It is not about pretending to be other than you are. It is about seeing that all that you are is given by the same Creator.

Understanding

When entering another person’s home, notice more than furniture or decoration. Every home tells a story. Some households reveal struggle. Others reveal careful stewardship. Some carry the marks of chaos or exhaustion. Others show quiet order.

Wisdom does not observe to judge. It observes to understand. Compassion grows when you see the circumstances shaping another person’s life, when you see not what divides you but what makes you the same.

Gratitude is simple, yet it carries immense power. It is not a matter of politeness but a posture of the heart. Giving thanks recognizes that life is both dependent on God and interdependent on each other.

No one moves through the world entirely alone. A small favor acknowledged with sincere thanks transforms a transaction into a relationship, while the absence of gratitude produces entitlement. Entitlement dissolves community because it teaches people to expect service without acknowledgment. A simple “thank you” is the witness that generosity has occurred.

The Apostle Paul instructs believers to speak and act in ways that build others up rather than tear them down. Leaving people better than you found them does not always mean grand gestures. Often it appears through nothing more than paying attention. Encouragement offered at the right moment, restraint when criticism would wound, generosity when no one is watching: these are the things that get remembered long after topics of conversation fade.

People forget arguments and accomplishments. They remember how they feel. Fraternity depends on dignity. Philanthropy depends on compassion. Family depends on trust. Remove these habits and relationships become mechanical, defensive, and fragile. Preserve them and communities begin to flourish almost effortlessly.

Etiquette is not trivial. It is the quiet part spoken out loud. It is the evidence of a rightly ordered soul, just as civilization is what happens when ordinary people choose to live by what civilizes us all.

Wronging the Wronged is Par for the Course

The pattern is older than modern psychology. Long before acronyms and clinical language, Scripture already named the character type that thrives on distortion: the scoffer.

Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse, and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury. Pr. 9:7

A scoffer is not simply a rude person or a critic. The scoffer is someone who treats truth as something to manipulate. He does not answer correction. He does not seek understanding. When confronted with wrongdoing, he bends reality so that the person harmed becomes the accused.

Proverbs warns repeatedly that the wise must learn to recognize such men, because engaging them as though they were honest participants only deepens the confusion.

DARVO is for Real

Modern researchers sometimes describe a similar pattern with the acronym DARVO.

The sequence is simple.

Deny

The scoffer won’t hear it. It doesn’t matter what you say. It doesn’t matter what actually happened. There is only one reality: the wrongdoing never happened. Whatever you think about it, your own view is trivial.

The facts are blurred, minimized, or ignored. Then comes:

Attack

Did you raise a concern? Guess what? Now you’re the target. Your motives will be questioned. Your character will be smeared. The conversation will shift away from the original problem you thought you were confronting and toward your defects for speaking up. Now, the sweet spot:

Reverse

Did they hurt you? Were they cruel? Were you trying to restore them in a spirit of gentleness? Too bad.

It’s your fault. It’s your hurting others that is the problem now. You are the aggressor. Don’t question it. It’s a moral certainty.

Fog serves the one who creates it, and narrative inversion is so effective that most people of good will are left disoriented and reeling from their first encounters with it.

Was it me? Did I do something I don’t remember? How can I be sure I’m not as bad as they say?

The answer to these questions is that in normal conflict, when two people are arguing, the truth is somewhere in the middle. But not in DARVO. Here, no matter how much you might think there is a misunderstanding, no matter how much you might seek for mutuality in repentance, there is only one possible problem: you.

Victim

Now the scoffer is the victim. The one causing harm speaks as the one who has been wronged. His reputation is under attack. His peace has been disturbed. He is the one suffering injustice.

Using the language of injury, the scoffer will speak of betrayal, cruelty, or injustice. The aim is not sympathy but power. If he can persuade you that he is the one suffering harm, then the conversation shifts toward protecting him from you:

The Offender

It’s your wound that is the problem. It’s your complaint about the wound that is the offense.

Hijacking the language of pain, grievance, and vulnerability, not to seek restoration but to shield himself from accountability, successfully occupying the seat of the victimhood, the moral center of the room tilts in the scoffer’s direction. Now, any efforts to reconcile the original harm is labeled harsh, vindictive, or cruel.

The truth has not changed, but the posture has been inverted. That inversion is the hinge on which the whole tactic turns.

You are the offender. You are the wrongdoer.

You are the Scapegoat

Once the person who raised the concern is described as the aggressor, the slanderer, the unstable one, the manipulator, the one creating conflict where none existed, the charge can expand beyond the original dispute. Past events are reinterpreted. Motives are rewritten. Character is undermined.

By the time the narrative settles, the original harm has nearly vanished from view, replaced by a story about the supposed misconduct of the one who spoke up.

Observers who were not present for the beginning of the conflict now see only the accusation against the newly labeled offender. People tend to judge the visible moment rather than the hidden sequence. Any emotional action displayed by the injured person becomes still more evidence used against them.

In modern language some call this projection. Some call it gaslighting. But the point is not the label.

It’s the Pattern

Your goal is understanding. The scoffer’s goal is to escape accountability.

The tactic succeeds because most people assume good faith. When two people offer competing stories, observers instinctively assume both are trying to tell the truth from different angles. The scoffer exploits that instinct. Strike first. Strike loudly. Strike with moral certainty.

Scoff.

Plant suspicion in the air and by the time the injured party finally names what happened, the claims are asymmetrical.

According to Bill Eddy in his new book 5 Types of People Who Can Ruin Your Life,

High Conflict Personalities have been with us throughout human history, but it’s only in recent years that we’ve begun to understand how they think, how they act, and what motivates them.

These folks make up about 10 percent of humanity, one person in ten. In North America, that’s more than thirty-five million people.

Unlike most of us, who normally try to resolve or defuse conflicts, people with high conflict personalities respond to conflicts by compulsively increasing them. They usually do this by focusing on Targets of Blame, whom they mercilessly attack.

The targets of blame are usually someone close or someone in a position of authority.

But He is Wrong about One Thing

The book of Proverbs is ancient, and it repeatedly warns us against the scoffer, the fool, the wicked, and the perverse. Their way is not hidden, and the pattern of avoiding shame and repentance is plain to see. What is more likely is that we as a society have forgotten that sin is not an idea, nor is iniquity something all people share in the same measure.

The justification of the sinner by the Reign of Jesus Christ means that the sinner is freed from his debt to turn from his twisted ways and live. But it does not mean that all people really mean well, or that just because someone holds a Bible they are actually committed to what it says.

The scoffer leaves clear traces.

• He refuses correction.

• He redirects blame rather than answering it.

• He inflames accusation when confronted with truth.

• He turns the harmed person into the supposed offender.

Once the pattern becomes visible, the confusion lifts. The issue is not a single disputed claim but a recognizable method of distortion. And the solution is not to correct the scoffer and get yourself more abuse. The lesson is to repent, lest you likewise perish.

My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

Surely, in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird;

Wisdom calls aloud: “How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge.

^“Turn at my rebuke; surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.” Pr. 1

Scripture offers sober counsel. The wise do not wrestle endlessly with the scoffer, because the contest itself becomes part of the trap. Endless argument feeds the fog. God urges discernment: recognize the path, refuse to walk it, and keep company with the upright.

This is not passivity.

This is Clarity

The wise see the tactic for what it is and refuse to grant it authority over the narrative. The scoffer thrives on confusion. Wisdom reigns by refusing to be confused.

In a culture flooded with accusation and counter-accusation, that clarity matters. Many conflicts are complex. But some are simpler than they first appear. When denial is followed by attack, and attack is followed by reversal, and reversal is followed by claims of victimhood, the pattern is all the evidence you need to stop answering the fool according to his folly, lest you become like him.

Paul stands on the stairs above the crowd, bruised from the beating that nearly ended him. The mob has just tried to tear him apart. Roman soldiers had to carry him away to keep him alive. Yet when he is given a moment to speak, he does not retreat into silence or diplomacy. He raises his hand and begins to speak to the same men who were shouting for his death.

He knows what is coming.

The Lord had already shown him. When Paul recounts his calling, he remembers praying in the temple and hearing the voice of Jesus Christ say that the people would not accept his testimony.

Paul offers his own objections to the crowd. They know who he was. They saw the fury with which he persecuted the church.

The answer does not change.

They will not listen.

Yet Paul still Speaks

This pattern runs through the whole story of God with his prophets. When the Lord called Jeremiah, he said plainly that the people were rebellious children. The prophet was not sent because the nation was eager to hear, but because the Father had something to say. The Lord warned him that kings, priests, and people would fight against him.

Ezekiel was told he was being sent to a stubborn house, hard of heart and stiff of neck. The command remained unchanged: speak my words whether they hear or refuse to hear, because the calling of a prophet does not depend on the probability of success. It depends on obedience to the voice of the Father.

Patriarchy is Fraternity

Scripture reveals God not merely as ruler but as Father, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. From that fountain flows the whole order of the kingdom. Human fatherhood is not the source of this language. It is the reflection of it. God is the true Father, and his people are called sons.

A father instructs his house whether the sons listen or rebel.

The prophets therefore stand as elder brothers inside the household of God. When Jeremiah speaks, it is the Father confronting disobedient sons. When Ezekiel warns, it is the Father calling stubborn children back to the table. When Paul stands before the mob, battered and breathing hard, he is still acting as a son who bears the word of his Father.

Silence is Not an Option.

A father who refuses to speak abandons his household. But the God of Israel does not abandon his sons. Even when they rage, even when they mock, even when they close their ears, the Father still sends his Word through those he calls.

Paul embodies that obedience. He knows the crowd will erupt at the goyim. He knows most of them will not receive what he says. Yet he speaks calmly in their own language and recounts the mercy shown to him on the Damascus road.

The message is declared not because the mob will applaud, but because the Father has decreed that it is so.

One Ear is Enough

He stands before the mob not because he believes the whole city will repent, but because somewhere in that crowd there is somebody who will.

The kingdom of God does not advance by unanimous applause. It advances by faithful speech and sovereign election. The preacher does not control the harvest. The Father does.

They will not listen. But someone will.

That one is a son.

Just Keep Dialing

The season of my life feels like Paul’s posture on those stairs.

Obedience does not look like it will help me. Labor does not look like. it will bear fruit. The seed I’m scattering looks like its falling on barren soil.

What of that? And, what of that?

Scripture tells us that Paul made tents with his own hands while the gospel advanced. The apostle who reasoned in synagogues and spoke before governors also stitched leather and worked the trade.

Much of my energy is building work with my hands, step by step. There is real progress there, and I am grateful for it. Provision matters. Discipline matters. And honest work has a way of clarifying the soul.

But my hope remains what it has always been: teaching, writing, and preaching the word of God publicly. The road back into that work is slow, because that is the way that it is. But the direction has not changed.

Memory is not only a neurological process. It is also a moral and cultural one.

A society that cannot remember cannot resist. It cannot judge truth from falsehood because the past itself dissolves. Modern neuroscience has begun to show something the prophets already understood: when people are trained to suppress what they feel, they do not merely silence emotion. They damage memory itself.

Several psychological studies demonstrate the mechanism. In a Stanford experiment from 2000, participants watched an emotional film. One group was instructed to suppress visible emotional reactions. Another group responded naturally. Those who suppressed their emotions remembered significantly fewer details afterward. The act of suppression consumed mental energy that would normally be used to encode memory. The brain was forced to choose between managing emotion and recording experience, and the recording suffered.

Brain imaging research later confirmed the biological cause. A 2012 study using neuroimaging found that emotional suppression dampens activity in the hippocampus, the brain’s primary memory-recording center. Normally the hippocampus works in concert with other regulatory regions to encode events. During suppression those regions stop coordinating. The brain is occupied with control rather than memory formation.

Stress Compounds the Damage

Suppression tends to elevate cortisol, the body’s stress hormone. Elevated cortisol is known to shrink the hippocampus over time. People under chronic stress can lose roughly ten to fifteen percent of hippocampal volume. Even short bursts of sustained cortisol can reduce synaptic connections between neurons by about twenty percent in only a few weeks. The encouraging finding is that these changes are not always permanent; when stress drops, some neural structures can recover.

Long-term population research suggests the consequences are serious. A Finnish longitudinal study that tracked more than one thousand older adults for about a decade found that habitual emotional suppressors had nearly five times the risk of developing dementia. The association held even after adjusting for genetics, smoking, obesity, and education.

In simple terms, the habit of suppressing inner response correlates with long-term memory decline.

There is an alternative response pattern that researchers call cognitive reappraisal. Instead of suppressing the emotion after it erupts, the person reframes the meaning of the event before the emotion fully takes hold. A 2003 Stanford and UC Berkeley study found that individuals who practiced reappraisal reported greater well-being, more positive relationships, and no impairment in memory formation. Reframing does not fight the brain’s response. It redirects interpretation so the hippocampus remains free to encode experience.

The neurological lesson is clear: suppression erodes memory; truthful interpretation preserves it.

Amen, and Amen

This insight intersects with a deeper cultural pattern. Long before modern neuroscience, thinkers described the danger of a population losing its memory through controlled narratives. Marshall McLuhan’s phrase “eight channels, one story” described the era of centralized mass media. Television networks and major newspapers delivered the same narrative through multiple outlets. The effect was not overt coercion but emotional shaping. Citizens learned what to feel about events before they had time to think about them.

The internet fractured our structure, but social media has introduced a new phase that has almost unquestionably converged with fifth-generation warfare. In such a battlefield, the conflict is fought through perception, narrative control, and psychological influence rather than conventional force. Information floods the field, yet interpretation becomes increasingly uniform. The goal is not merely persuasion. It is behavioral alignment.

Every ideological system that seeks total control eventually requires a population that does not think independently and cannot clearly remember how its beliefs were formed. Historical communist regimes attempted to achieve this through censorship and propaganda. Digital systems pursue the same outcome through algorithmic emotional management. Outrage cycles, fear triggers, and moral pressure encourage people to suppress discomfort rather than examine it. Research suggesting that emotional suppression gradually erodes memory makes our current winds all the more diabolical.

This problem is not political but spiritual. Scripture treats memory as a covenant act. Israel is constantly commanded to remember the works of God, to teach them to children, to bind them to daily life. Forgetting is never neutral. Forgetting leads to moral drift.

When citizens repeatedly silence their internal responses in order to remain socially compliant, we weaken the very cognitive structures that would allow us to notice contradictions with our former selves. Cultural amnesia becomes not just possible but inevitable. A people forget earlier statements, prior policies, or past warnings.

Narrative Replaces Memory

The biblical answer to cultural amnesia is not emotional suppression.

It is truth anchored in revelation.

Proverbs trains the mind in discernment, teaching the difference between wisdom and folly, between the voice of the seducer and the path of life. The words of Jesus Christ in the Gospels restore moral sight, cutting through the fog of competing narratives and calling men back to obedience, repentance, and clarity.

A society that reads Scripture in faith cultivates a different kind of memory. The mind is trained to evaluate events in light of enduring truth rather than transient emotion. The heart learns not to suppress reality but to interpret it rightly before God.

The antidote to mass forgetting is therefore as simple as it is ancient.

Read the Book

Let the Word of Jesus Christ form the interpretive frame through which every event is judged. Where culture trains you to suppress your inner alarm, the Spirit of Scripture teaches you to test the spirits of this age. Doing this in remembrance of Him is more than a symbol. It is the only Way.

The people who choose Scripture over the distractions and opinions of men will remain awake, even while the world around them drifts into a godless, fanatical sleep.

A people who forget will accept almost any story.

A people who remember truth will not be easily moved.
