Earth woke early, but after dawn. Camp bustle floated in on a breeze, and his muscles were eager for the activity of a soldier’s life. The black leathers fit him slickly as he emerged from his tent. He turned more than one head amongst the scurrying motion as he made an inner perimeter sweep and made a stop at the relief.
He had no orders. But now he wasn’t just any old ant among the hive, which was made more plain by the hot morning meal of bacon and eggs still steaming on the footlocker inside his tent when he returned. He’d not eaten so well in months. It did not take him long, which was a good thing. Because by the time he was licking his lips, one of Gaoltea’s Rangers stood at the tent door.
