Justice, Judgment and Equity in the Red Letters
An Etymological and Contextual Analysis of Overlapping Conceptuality in Matt 7.2 and Prov 1.3
Matthew 7:2
For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.
Judgment:
Greek: κρίνω (krinō) - to judge, decide, separate.
κρίσις (krisis) - decision, judgment.
κρίμα (krima) - judgment, verdict, condemnation.
Measurement:
Greek: μέτρον (metron) - measure, standard of measurement.
μετρέω (metreō) - to measure.
μετρητής (metretēs) - measurer.
Proverbs 1:3
To receive the instruction of wisdom: Justice, judgment, and equity.
Judgment:
Hebrew: מִשְׁפָּט (mishpat) - judgment, justice, ordinance.
שָׁפַט (shafat) - to judge, govern.
Justice:
Hebrew: צֶדֶק (tzedek) - righteousness, justice.
Root: Semitic root **(ṣ-d-q) - to be just, righteous.
Comparative Analysis:
κρίνω (krinō) (Judgment):
Root: Proto-Indo-European **(krei-) - to sift, separate, decide.
Semantics: The process of distinguishing, separating, or deciding between options.
μέτρον (metron) (Measurement):
Root: Proto-Indo-European **(med-) - to measure, consider.
Semantics: The act of measuring or determining the size, quantity, or degree of something.
מִשְׁפָּט (mishpat) (Judgment):
Root: Semitic root **(sh-f-t) - to judge, govern.
Semantics: The act of delivering justice, making decisions based on laws or standards.
צֶדֶק (tzedek) (Righteousness/Justice):
Root: Semitic root **(ṣ-d-q) - to be just, righteous.
Semantics: The state of being morally correct and justifiable, often used in the context of fairness and ethical behavior.
Quantum Physics as Metaphor
Judgment (κρίνω / מִשְׁפָּט):
Analogous to the process of observational measurement, where the act of measuring a quantum system collapses into a definite state. Thus, with cats, quarks, and strongholds, one’s judgment pre-determines certain outcomes within a set range.
Measurement (μέτρον / צֶדֶק):
Reflects the act of quantifying properties such as position, momentum, or energy in quantum systems. Accurate measurement is crucial for determinations in all true sciences.
Calculus as Metaphor
Judgment (κρίνω / מִשְׁפָּט):
Can be likened to the concept of integration in calculus, where the integral sums up the effects or accumulates values over an interval, leading to a final decision or result. Judgment involves accumulating evidence or factors to reach a final verdict.
Measurement (μέτρον / צֶדֶק):
Relates to the concept of differentiation, where measuring the rate of change at any given point is crucial. Calculus uses differentiation to determine how quantities change instantaneously, paralleling how measurements assess dimensions or quantities precisely.
(Pardon the hasty penmanship on this 1st note that I don’t desire to TEA up just yet.)
Comments on Analysis
The etymological and contextual analysis of judgment and measurement in both Greek and Hebrew scriptures reveals deep parallels to concepts fields requiring precise and accurate understanding. The biblical overlap with monetary policy should not be lost on 21st century Christians. Old Testament exhortations to fair judgment, accurate measurement and balanced books are not erased by the proper distinction between Law and Gospel. In the Kingdom of Jesus Christ Truth matters.
Simplified Synthesis and Direct Application
By integrating these concepts into our daily talk, we inspire a harmonious framework in our talk, publishing the importance of justice, precision, and integrity in all areas of judgment and measurement, whether in theological, scientific, or mathematical domains.
Judgment (κρίνω / מִשְׁפָּט): The power of observation.
Measurement (μέτρον / צֶדֶק): The power of differentiation.
Righteousness (צֶדֶק): The power of correctness.
As a set of ideas, these “righteous” words and their semantic “measurement” are crucial for ensuring good judgment in your life!
They are also promised as gifts to those who read the Proverbs in Jesus’ name.
Go get some. He is risen!
